Hello, Yes we have a 35 x 18 great room of family room and kitchen. The dining room is on the other side of the staircase, but shares the same floor. we would like to update to a scratch resistent and durable floor; we have two dogs, both Huskies.

Oak has stood the test of ages against both damp and pets. various kinds of vinyl are popular but will never look as nice or hold their value as well. Tile will wear well but also be hard on your body (and cold in winter)...

What is your current flooring? May we see an image of the space?

I have to point out that oak hardwood will be more durable and show scratches less than the engineered/prefinished floors you have. Also, their lighter color will show less wear. This would be my choice.

That said, you are already standing on tile and don’t seem to mind it. You could choose brick or stone flooring.

hmmm. I wouldn't mind a light colored brick.

If you go 'brick' then do yourself a favour and work with brick-look porcelain tile. Brick is a BEAST to clean/seal/wax. There are those who LOVE their brick floors (they usually inherit them with a house = brick was sealed and/or wax by the previous homeowner). And then there are those people who put in brick without any of the right sealants/waxing. They are the one's who HATE their brick....because they realized, too late, the amount of work they take.
