Oh wow, I didn't think that was possible! So sorry! I always thought that if you had internet, you had access. I suppose it is the speed?

Yes, PM, streaming requires a fast internet speed. Youtube has a lot of gardening shows. I think many of Monty Don's travels are on Youtube.

Sue W - I just signed up for Britbox as well. Cut the cord a few years ago and used Acorn for 2 years, but now Britbox has more offerings. Seems BBC has upped the ante. Of course, all the garden shows were added to my watch list - right after Father Brown. Seems New England gardeners have more in common than the same weeds. 😊

Sue, I'm just getting ready to sign up for Britbox. We love British mysteries and we watch a lot of PBS shows. We are just finishing up Endeavor on Acorn and then I'm switching to watch Inspector Morse on BritBox. They have a number of shows we like. And yes, they have a lot of the garden shows I mentioned.

We get Amazon Prime and can get BritBox thru them. We still use Netflix as well.

We haven't cut the cord yet. My husband needs the business channel and so far I've not found another service that makes it worth it to drop cable. I am ready to drop it if I can figure that out. We haven't even watched one cable station in 2 months.

Jane we used to stream old episodes of the BBC shows on Netflix but when Britbox came out they became unavailable on Netflix. No cable here. We use antennas and get plenty of local stations, PBS, etc. A couple of years ago, Dave's daughter introduced me to Big Dreams Small Spaces, a Monty Don gardening show. Maybe I've been spending too much time in my cave but before that I had never heard of Monty Don...lol.

PM, The Coroner is our current Britbox choice. It's light entertainment.

I am lucky in that WGBX, one of the Boston PBS stations has a lot of Britbox shows. So as long as I have my tv coming in through a satellite dish, I have science and light drama and mysteries available. But as far as I can tell, they don’t have any of the British gardening shows.

NHBabs, can you get Youtube via satellite on your computer? If so, just a search for British gardening will bring up a whole list of free shows.

My internet is really too slow for YouTube except at times like 5 am Sunday morning when other traffic is low. I end up watching a lot of buffering, even set at the lowest quality level. Most folks measure their internet connection in tens of kbps whereas mine does not reach 1 kbps even at the best of times. It is DSL rather than satellite because satellite was worse and expensive.

I am a firm believer that internet connectivity needs to be treated like electric connectivity was back in the thirties. The farm I live on didn’t get electricity until then, and I don’t expect a decent internet connection until someone besides a for-profit company does it. I had to bring my work computer home because I can’t work remotely from home. And I literally live 15 minutes from the state capitol building. :-/

Sue, do you have an antenna you are happy with?

PM, the best one we have is the good old fashioned metal one that everyone used to have on the roof. Ours is in the attic and is attached to the main TV. The others have the new smaller varieties and they are OK. I think it depends on the location of your house in relation to the nearest TV towers. Some stations will come in better than others. We have friends who live in a location where antennas don't work.

I had an antenna in the LR with the TV and it worked okay. We did get the PBS station and at least 4,5 and 7 regular broadcast stations pretty clear. I really didn't want to go to the trouble of installing one in the attic. [g]. I did look up our location on a website that tells you how close you are to a tower. We were in range of some, but it said there was some interference from hills between us and the tower. So I came to the conclusion that if we wanted a better result we'd probably have to go up on the roof, or like you, into the attic.

We gave our antenna to one of the kids, because we weren't using it that much, still hanging onto cable. But I am hoping to change all that this fall. They have had a very good result with the antenna at their house and don't have cable any more.

We had an antenna with a rotor when we first moved to our current location because that had worked well at previous homes in the same town. But the current house is in a valley and we sort of got one station, hence now paying for satellite TV. I liked the rotor at the previous location because we could improve the reception by setting it correctly for a given station.

We've picked up BritBox and started watching Prime Suspect with Helen Miren, which we haven't seen before, but the garden shows are amazing. They have a show called Gardener's World which I found very enjoyable, it's an hour long and there are 90 episodes available! lol. And there has to be at least 20 different gardening shows. We use Roku to watch Amazon Prime and get BritBox that way.
