Is there an issue with this Chimney?

I am looking at buying a house and everything else checks out but the chimney leaves me feeling uneasy. The sellers said that alot of old houses have chimneys like this and that it is completely safe. This is what the chimney looks like in the attic. Is it acceptable or would it need repair?

Looks kind of crooked. I recommend hiring a chimney mason to inspect the chimney.

Maybe you think a colonoscopy can be done from a photo of a butt on the internet?

It is common to see chimneys that offset like that in the attic. It is also common that they are not properly lined and could be a hazard. Is this for a wood-burning fireplace or? Lining a chimney can cost several thousand dollars, so you may want a chimney sweep to run a camera through it and give you a report.

where I live a sweep can do the inspection but a mason has the final say.

California, maybe a mason because of earthquakes.

The sweeper recommended an exam, based on video, forwarded to a mason....ok but inspect during next sweep. I had some cracking.
