Need help with 8’X10’ master bathroom remodel

last modified: 5 years ago

We r planning to remodel our 25 yr old master bath. attaching the pics with current layout. Need help with some designs for vanity area and also how to make it appear a little open. It’s a narrow bathroom with vanity one side and bathtub/toilet/closet on another side.

One important detail is we are planning to move in the next 2-3 yrs. We would either rent or sell this house so don’t want to do a lot of expensive upgrades but don’t want to go cheap either.

My qs.

1. The vanity is 10’ long. I am thinking to have 2 vanities with a tower cabinet in the middle. Planning to go with a local cabinet maker for this.

2. I want to take the closet out next to the toilet. My dilemma is should I just put a half wall there and use the open space for laundry hamper or put a linen closet (same style as of vanity).

3. The bathtub area is 36”X60”. Should we convert the bathtub with a standing shower or just replace it with a new bathtub and tile the walls?

Please let me know your thoughts. Greatly appreciate it.

If you're moving in 2-3 years, then you'll want to do mainly cosmetic things, not structural. This is what I'd focus on:

    • new vanity with no tower. The room is already small and a tower will make it smaller
    • new paint
    • redo the linen closet so that the bottom is for a laundry basket and the top is for storage

If you're staying, then all of the above plus upgrade the flooring. And if you prefer showers and there is another tub in your house, lose the tub.

@Jennifer K. The vinyl floor is peeling off so I would have to replace it. For the vanity area, it looks so long and useless and that’s why I wanted something different. Will it look odd if I just do 60” vanity and leave the rest area open. Or may be have the linen closet on that side and leave the area open next to toilet?

We have nearly the exact master bath layout minus the linen closet. I agree with Jennifer K - lose the tower in the middle. We’re in the middle of completely renovating the master bath too - good luck!

@Eden Rose Botanicals, is your vanity this long too? How did u design it? I can let go of the middle tower but feel the 10’ long vanity looks very monotonous. Will it look awkward if I do 60“ or 72” vanity and leave the rest of the area open .

Your plan isn't dimensioned, but I think you may have sufficient space to rotate the toilet and build a wall or half wall to enhance privacy.

Regarding the double bowl vanity, I have a similar one in my master bath (mine's 11'6" long.) It has a two-door cabinet that sits on the vanity top. The cabinet is hinged in the center which provides convenient storage for all manner of personal items. It also helps give a sense of "his" and "her" areas. We have open shelves below the center cabinet for linen storage. We find it works well for our needs.

@Charles Ross Homes , here is another pic I found that I was thinking of. I also want 2 door cabinet so can use the bottom one for hamper and top one with shelves for towels.

I was thinking may be I can do recessed cabinet and 21“-22” deep tower or vice versa.

Again, please ignore the drawers on the bottom of tower. This is just to share the recessed look.

I don’t have the dimension because that’s what the help I need. I am lost how to design them width wise for cabinets and drawers🙁.

    Hi, Sofia,

Yes, the photo is a similar arrangement. One thing to keep in mind is that a drawer at countertop level doesn't work if anything is placed--intentionally or otherwise-- front of it. If that's an issue, then either omit it or start the drawers a couple of inches higher than the counter. I also suggest you hinge the cabinet in the center and move the pulls to facilitate his/her access. It makes a big difference.

Thank you Charles. Yes, there will not be any drawer in the tower. I prefer doors. Will keep the hinge idea in mind although it’s mainly gonna be for towels. I am sure my husband will have enough storage space on his side of vanity 😀.

For 120” inch counter space, can u share some dimensions that will be good for daily use. All I know is I don’t links small drawers as I feel they are useless.

Not sure if it’s allowed to ask here and I apologize in advance if it’s not, but is it possible to see your cabinet arrangements?

    Thanks again,

    Sofia

    A couple of questions:

    • do you use the bathroom together so that you actually need 2 sinks?
    • if you only had 1 sink, would you be sad? (A lot of people are taking them out now, so don't worry about resale when making this decision)
    • how do you feel about an armoire at the far end of the counter across from the current linen closet? That would get you plenty of storage, not block sight lines and provide a nice visual change from acres of counter

You need to decide if you're doing this reno for you -- in which case, go all out -- or for the next resident -- in which case, do the minimum since they probably will want to change it anyway.

I disagree with Jennifer about taking out the 2nd sink. You have plenty of room for it. But a 10' vanity is rather long. What about an 8' vanity with a linen closet (cabinet style) at the end of it?

I also like the 4" deep wall-hung cabinets for bathroom stuff, since it tends to be small and gets lost in a deep closet. That would be less intrusive than a center tower.

Think about what you keep in your bathroom and how you use it, and design the cabinetry accordingly. If you use lots of different makeup, then a bunch of drawers makes sense. If you need the storage mostly for spare towels because you only use them once, then add linen cabinet or shelves. Lots of medications? Install a medicine cabinet.

    You get the idea.

Hi! My vanity is mid-build so the photos won't be helpful but we will have 111" vanity with two under-mount sinks. The dimensions are 111" long and 22" deep. I forget the height but it is standard. I need/want counter space, which was the leading factor in not adding in a tower. We have a linen closet and other storage for towels, etc. When I run back to the house, I'll ask guys for the dimensions. This photos (minus the tower) served as the inspiration for the vanity.

I'm not so much worried about the monotony of it because we've selected a pretty quartz slab and I'm hanging sconces that will flank the mirrored medicine cabinets (as shown above).

For your other question on pulling the small closet, here is what our bathroom looks like (similar to your footprint) without a closet.

@Jennifer K, definitely for resale. We plan to move in 2-3 years.

@Eden Rose Botanicals, bathroom does looks bigger without the closet!! Would love to get the vanity measurement if possible. I am gonna discuss about the middle tower with my husband and see what he says but I also know as of now, I keep it cluttered with all the space I have😉.

@weedyacres, thanks for the tips. Yes we r big on storage so that’s why was leaning towards the door style vs drawers.

At our old house we did a bathroom renovation and ended up with this layout. It was quite lovely. I tried to find the floor plan from when we sold but couldn’t. Behind the door, to the right of the photo, was a linen cupboard too.

Another qs for the vanity side wall. We are planning to go with 2 sink vanity on each side as the current layout. As I am researching for mirror, I am reading that wall to wall mirror(what I have right now) will make the bathroom look spacious. But couple of contractors who came said because I have narrow bathroom(3’ open floor area), the wall to wall mirror is bringing the reflection of my shower and toilet side making it look more closer and thus smaller. Hope I am able to explain.

Any insight with the pics I have provided??

    Thanks.

@L.D. Johnson, thanks for the detailed reply. We met someone today and thats what he suggested to do as well. He is gonna mock it up for us.

Thank you everyone. We decided to go with current layout without any tower in the middle. We have 2 choices for cabinets.

Getting cabinets from a local cabinet maker or getting 2 of these from Home Depot without the top. will get quartz for the countertop.

    Appreciate all the inputs.

Go with a local cabinet maker. He'll be able to make something perfect for your space and the cost difference from Home Depot won't be huge, especially considering the extra quality. Additionally, you'll be supporting a local business-- and in these pandemic times, they need our support even more than usual. HD will bounce back; the little guys won't.

Yes!! That’s what both my husband and I are leaning towards. The only issue will be if the turnaround time is more than 2 weeks as we would like to be done soon.

You can get tons of prefab units easily too. The one in pic I posted was from Restoration Hardware. Recently on our new build we got prefab units for a few areas.
