Paintings in those vibrant colors won’t really “blend in”, and the planeshiptraincar is very bossy on that wall. It needs its own wall if you have another one. Put the tv on a sleek cabinet. The painting over the fireplace is small. Some people like the art over the fireplace about the same size as the firebox opening, but because your surround is also black, I would find a wider piece for over the mantel. A red or other vibrant area rug might be good in that room.

Yep painting over the fireplace wasn’t intentional but it got it off the floor for now.

It will be difficult to balance that wall with your large art. Wondering if your sectional could be turned so long side faces the wall, art hung lower and centered on wall, your chair placed to the right of the fireplace on a slant - will feel similar to below

You need a longer cabinet for the TV to sit on. Perhaps if you lowered the transportation art it would look better. Try just leaning it against the wall for now.

How about mount tv over mantle to free up wall space?

I’m not sure how to go about a floating tv stand or even in the floor... it will be awkwardly close to the fire place .. the other challenge is that The a/v connections are wired in behind where the tv currently is so would need to do some heavy remodeling or rewiring.

Yes position of the big art isn’t ideal but I moved it from another room when I started painting to get it out of th way and it looked fine to me ha! These are the only two things I have on my walls so far.

If you really want feng shui, you need to post a floor plan of the entire living space and indicate north.

One immediate bad chi item is that the seating has its back to how the room is entered. Hard to tell from photos exactly, but that's how it looks. There should be a chair used by the person who uses the room most, facing the main entry of the room. The good news is that the fireplace is supposed to be the main focus of the living room which you can do, but having a TV close to the fireplace or distracting from the fireplace creates bad chi.

I don't know anything about feng shui, but for functionality sake right now where the TV is located it looks inconvenient for the most amount of people sitting on the couch. If the couch is full it seems more people have to crank their head to the side or stare at the fireplace when relaxing in what I assume is the television room? I would find a way to put the TV above the fire place or flip the couch so more people have a better view.

With the shape of the room, I think you have done the best you can. It is rather

awkward. A rug would warm up the space at the sofa area.

I have not read all comments, except I did notice Angel’s comment, directly above, and a rug might be nice in your room, although floor looks good as it is, also.

If your dilemma is solved and I’m repeating info, forgive me - but I thought I’d chime in since you mention Feng Shui and I am somewhat familiar with Eastern Feng Shui principles.

It all comes down to what is most comfortable for you in your space. My take on it would be to keep tv wall fairly clear - and do an art gallery wall either over sofa, or alternatively on another wall - with one piece displayed over sofa.

And I would suggest either setting tv on a long, low console or wall mounting tv over long low console; and you could mount tv on an articulating arm.

And on the console, you could place a plant or two.

Well....here goes....the couch should be on the wall where the large art and tv are. The tv should be where the world graphic is.

You would need to move sofa back, so that there is room for the longer console, and since sofa looks like it might possibly be in direct line of main entrance (?) - would not be a bad idea to move sofa back a bit. And I suggest a slim sofa table to anchor floating sofa.

And with longer tv console, you don’t have to center tv, btw. You could place tv or mount tv on left side if you’d like.

So would be opposite of this setup.

Ideally you would move the TV from its current spot and turn the sofa to go along that wall and the railing wall. It looks like a sectional, so if you could make that placement, also swap the backless section to be to the right of the fireplace.

If moving the TV isn't possible and I get that, and if you don't need all of the sofa seating, can you not use the end part with the back and then put the chair in the corner beside the sofa, facing the door and the fireplace?

That way, if you have to keep the TV where it is, having just the chair in the corner may allow you to keep the artwork on the wall where it is. It won't look so heavy if you don't use the entire sectional.

A rug with red in it would be great feng shui in the living room for luck and richness. Maybe something like this that picks up the colors in your picture:

I know you said you wanted to keep the dog's room for dance practice so let's just leave that empty and let the joy of dance create great chi there. :-)

You have two pieces of travel energy, unfortunately they aren't quite in the right spot which is the northwest. But, nothing's etched in stone. The picture seems to be in the love/relationship area. Not sure shipping out or flying away is auspicious. Yikes! Or maybe I'm not imagining the direction of the room correctly. If I read the directions correctly, the stairs are in the northwest so maybe that indicates..."Let's get outta here!" and that's okay.

But for some easy changes, swap the sofa around or remove the end section with the back and put the chair in the corner with a small side table that has a pair of something on it (candlesticks, small picture of two of something, maybe dogs in love) for love/relationship. And get a rug with red in it.

Here's a sweet pic you can print out and make any size you want and put it in a small frame or maybe you have a picture of your own dog with its BFF (but not one with you). Or a pic with you and your sweetie (not the dog). Ha ha, can you tell I'm a dog person?

How big is the TV and how wide is the room? You could always opt for the map wall with a larger TV mounted on an articulated arm over a credenza underneath that is 25% wider than the TV. Then turn the sofa to be on the art/TV wall you have now. Angle your Eames chair at that corner between the dog area and the curtain.

Thanks all. The doors to to the deck, opposite side of structure from main entrance. Used in summer, and lots of light in the morning since they face south east.

I’m not opposed to a different console since this was basically a POS from my uni days. But I just don’t know how to make a new nice one look not awkward beside the fireplace.

Re: tv above fireplace (assuming I could make wiring work) ..... aren’t there concerns being on a wall that gets warm or above the fireplace ? It’s wood burning. Not sure if that makes any difference other than the occasional ash or smoke that rarely billows out..

I would go long and low on tv stand, as I suggested above. I like the idea of red on the stand as suggested by Tozmo1. But I think something like this could flow seamlessly with the fireplace. It’s an expandable piece. I’d mount tv lower. But you get the idea.

I think the right console could work well and balance the wall.

But another idea that I think might work well for you is a slim, floating console. May actually be good to get tv up off of the floor, because you don’t really have the floor space. With any bigger console you bring in, you would most likely need to move the sofa back. In general, I think it might be a good idea to move the sofa back a bit, so it is not so pressed up against tv wall. But you are the best judge of what works in your space, and if it’s comfortable that way - that’s the most important consideration. In any case, with your setup wall mounting with a slim, floating console may be a very good option.

You'll need to find one that is not quite as long as some of these or remove the end part of the sectional if you can, to make space for a longer one. Something like this, low but not quite as long would work. Any good mid century modern stores in your town? That's what this one is from in my town.

Hi everyone,

Well, not long after my initial post, I ended up moving overseas. I sold everything, other than my place. Thankfully my tenant took good care of it, but now I'm back to the drawing board. I'm in the process of moving back in, so I need to start fresh.

I decided to put the TV in the basement (another recent post on here). Now, I want the living room to be more of an 'analogue' space: fireplace, books, and I want a vinyl record player (the surround sound wiring was already here. So, this will be my calm room.

Any ideas upon this new info would be greatly appreciated. Where should I put a record player / what sort of table? One sofa, two, or a sectional in the corner? Where could a firewood holder sit? I can build something if I can integrate it soothly into the design - not a huge fan of random iron racks 'floating' amongst everything else, I'd rather just go the garage any time I need more.

The things in the photos are the only furniture I have as I'm moving in. Here's the place mostly empty, and also a hand sketch of the floor dimensions. Many thanks in advance.

What kind of record player are you considering i.e. turntable with speakers or an integrated record player? How many people do you want to accommodate? Have you considered removing the popcorn ceiling while the room is pretty vacant? I removed almost all the popcorn in my house and the impact on the calm of the room is amazing.

@tozmo1 thanks... the dog moved out with my roommate who was its owner, although he is doing fine. So it is a very big empty space for just me. There's a song in there somewhere..

These questions are all big question marks. I'm really starting over in the same space/city, even many of the people I knew are moved away. I want to make the furniture and electronics fit the space, since I've always done the opposite (cramming random stuff into the space i find available) - so even those, I'd look for suggestions.

Popcorn celing is on the 'to do' list. It's not in the budget at the moment, although I did get it tested and it's asbestos-free.

@Elena Zzzz what do I consider though? what's it mean if the fireplace is facing a map and also North and also the airport? Last time that resulted in me moving across the world for two years. lol.

Running water would be cool but no idea how / where to pull that off.

So as I understand it, you need seating (for how many?) and space for some type of record player and perhaps speakers. You originally mentioned dance practice space. Is that still a requirement or did that go with the roommate also?

I'm no sound expert, but if you want calm sound you'll need to soften the acoustics in the space with area rugs, perhaps drapes and certainly upholstered pieces.

@tozmo1 I don't have any network in this city anymore... so I'll say, seating that looks balanced with the space? Yep, record player, speakers (two will mount at top of wall on the map wall - already wired), maybe bookshelve(s). Ideas for fire wood holder (I've seen some that integrate into the wall or mantle?)

I would consider painting one wall in an accent color you like to get some color in there and brighten things up. I would get a throw and/or some accent pillows in that color for the leather couch. You could get a large artificial tree in there also. I think that getting some color in there is the key to changing the look and feel of the room. You could also get a nice area rug in the accent color. With just the chairs in there, it doesn't do the room justice. Consider a small sectional if you no longer have the black leather couch, or even a futon. Maybe add a glass topped coffee table to further lighten things up in there.
