Am I missing a backsplash opportunity?

My countertop is Arctic Mist quartz--really plain which I love. Had been thinking of glossy white subway 4x12 stacked for a contemporary/clean backsplash look. I was choosing between a flat tile and one with a bit of undulation but I'm second guessing myself--am I missing an opportunity to do something different? You all come up with such amazing backsplash ideas that I wanted to send it out it to Houzz.

And...I'm also thinking of painting uppers white. They just seem so HEAVY. Good idea/bad idea? Thanks so much for your help!

Yes! you're missing an opportunity to do something cool

Last thing that kitchen needs is plain old subway tile.

    I love your black ceiling!

this Gunmetal Chalk tile from Heath ceramics would look cool!

what do you think of more of a modern style tile? not over modern, but just a little more fitting to your design?

this is more of the wavy, or hand-make look tile (3x12 size) You called them undulating. this is what they look like.

smaller size, Cloe, in the white

Cloe has this tile above and below (I think it's a 2x6 or 2x8) shown here in gray (they have white and other colors) in the stack layout. The dark blue one is the vertical stack layout

and I love the finger tiles. (comes in all colors) you can stack them this way or the other. these are hand glazed.

do you like the picket style?

    a little more modern style.

I love this tile. AKDO BirchWhiteOrigin.

I love this calacatta marble in the chevron. this would bring out the warm tones of the cabinets. and it looks modern

Check over at Tilebar. you get 5 samples for $5. This is their Enigma line.

check out some of their other more modern style tiles. they have a lot, like this London Spring:

    Nabi Harlequin

i don't suppose you like something like this metallic copper glaze in a chevron? you have plenty of light in there to carry off something like this.

you could do a similar layout w/your regular tiles. if you found a 3x9 size, or a 2x8, it would fit perfectly.

I’ll leave tile choices to Beth, but in terms of paint, I would look instead at just replacing the upper doors with white doors.

Beth Wow! These are awesome! I do really like the picket style. I'm going to order samples and try them out. Thank you so much!

Daisychain01 -- do you mean just contacting the cabinet manufacturer and ordering white doors? and keep the dark cabinet boxes? I don't know that I've ever seen that done but I love the idea.

Wow, LOVE your art hanging on the backsplash! GREAT to see something original and different. Think the dark upper & lower cabinets nicely frame the area. Maybe add another, or larger, pic on the left side. Would not add tile or paint cabs. Nice job!

Lisa, I also like all of your artwork too.

another option is to get a piece of glass, have it cut to your size, and place it against the wall. you could trap your pictures behind the glass and keep them clean that way.

you could do the same w/acrylic.

as for the picket, they have them in all sizes, matte or glossy, and you can do vertical or horizontally.

Tile bar carries this style^ get the samples from them

    below are Crayons.

    what about a Zelliege tile?

you don't want a black to go w/the ceiling?

You use your backsplash area for art. So yours is really the ideal kitchen for a backsplash made of your counter material. I would suggest a 2” backsplash made of your arctic mist quartz, and select a nice washable paint for the walls above.

I love tile, I really do. But the way you use your space, tile may not be the best choice. I think it’s wonderful to pepper such a utilitarian space with pearls of art.

I think the black ceiling is very cool, but wonder if it adds to the feeling of heaviness you describe. Perhaps someone could virtually paint it white to see if that makes the upper cabinets feel a little lighter.

Lisa,,,Yay!! It looks amazing! you should send a pic into Tilebar so that they can use it on the IG or gallery wall.

Looks great. I'm happy to see the upper cabs still dark-- your kitchen has a nice tailored, contemporary vibe.

Beth H. I really like the Zelliege tile you posted above 3 months ago. Could you please let me know where I can find the subway Zelliege tile (it's the 5th photo in that comment, the one w/black countertop). Thanks.
