Back growing up as a kid living without AC most of my life, my mom came up with the idea of putting box fans in the window. We were living in the Chicago metro area at the time. (This only works if the outdoor temps are cool)

Works best if you have more than one window in a room. Put box fan in one window the other window creates a steady stream of 'exhaled' air.

If you want to get more air into the bedrooms, pointing at the floor may be your best bet. The only way to really know is it try each method for a night or two and see what you like. Things like this almost always come down to personal preference!

Air blown by a interior fan (that's not blowing in cooler air from a cooler outside) doesn't generally cool the inside at all, unless blown against a surface that's cooler than the air and if then, only marginally. Fans cool people in the path of the moving air because the moving air triggers skin evaporation and surface cooling.
