Kitchen Design Ideas Needed

We are in the process of updating our kitchen and are needing some design ideas to help us get started. The purpose of the project is to lighten up the area. Our house has a very open concept and we are worried changing things in the kitchen will interrupt the flow. We are replacing countertops, backsplash, brand new island, and refinishing the cabinets. Cabinet color is really our biggest dilemma.

Looks like a great space to work with. What’s your style? This reads almost cabin to me as it exists. Am I seeing a concrete floor and chiseled edge granite? Are the cabinets in need of refinishing Or intentionally rustic?

Would replace the countertops -- solid color and smooth ... no raised feature atop the countertop on the living room / dining room side.

If the "island" -- ?the long row of cabinets on the right?-- is crooked at about the dishwasher, as it appears to me to be, then would straighten that -- even if it means ending the cabinets at the dishwasher and making the rest of the cabinets to the right of the dishwasher a separate base cabinet or rolling cart cabinet.

If, however, it is just the dishwasher that is angled, would straighten that even if it means replacing the dishwasher.

Would replace the cabinet hardware. To me, the cabinets seem too large for the knobs or the knobs too small for the cabinet doors. But I'm not a pro.

Like the rest. Nice kitchen. Great space.

    Great beams and window trim.

Have you considered a more dominant mantel with a straight front edge?

If you can separate the tall base cabinets from the shorter base cabinets and create two separate islands, each with a level countertop, consider doing that.

Likie all that natural light. coming in.

    Thanks for all your replies.

@Amanda Tharp - no decisions have been made other than what appliances we are getting and the island will be completely ripped out and rebuilt. My husband would like to just refinish the cabinets instead of re-building new ones. My goal stylistically is for it to lighten up the space all while flowing with the rest of the house. I took the style quiz on Houzz and it says my style is farmhouse, transitional, and shabby chic.

@Katie B. - yes, concrete floor (not part of the remodel) and chiseled edge granite that will be replaced. Thinking quartzite. Yes, the cabinets are my biggest hurdle right now because I don't know what will look best. I do not think white cabinets will flow well or look good against current wall color and we are not wanting to paint.

    Kaylee,

A blank slate is always exciting but can be daunting as well!
Quartzite would be very nice on the counters especially a light color tone. Have you considered an earthy/ dusty blue or navy for your cabs? If you hate blues you could go for a warm medium tone grey instead (light than the wood in the living bit darker than the walls).

At the island it would be beautiful to see a long straight run with barstools on the backside. I could see that being an accent white or the only wood tone or could see continuing the navy there.

I would also suggest a long and colorful rug in between the back wall and island, a Turkish or kilim rug would be very nice and it’s easy to find options with neutral enough patterns to still fit that transitional/ farmhouse style.

New island pendants which make more of a statement would be ideal as well

I like the finishes you have already to be honest

The floors are great, I’m glad you’re keeping them.

Since you‘re changing the island, I’d focus your attention/changes there...this taupey/grey/green is really nice. Keep your perimeter as it is, but update the hardware. I see industrial-style lighting too.
