It doesn’t look like Prince Charles which I grow, and I thought that stans had more clustered flowers. Since you have had several clematis in the garden, it may be a chance seedling. Does it have the inclination to twine the petioles or is it one of the scramblers that don’t climb well?

Yeah, I figure it must be a seedling throw-back to some parent line because it doesn’t look like anything I ever grew. It doesn’t seem to twine... It’s very cute and fits well with the plantings there so I hope it survives!

I am thinking that it reminds me of some of the integrifolia hybrids.

I would certainly guess that there is some C. integrifolia in it somewhere... I have only grown a couple of clematises with that in their breeding that I’m aware of - none of them were in the area where this is growing and the neighbour has none near here either, so it’s a mystery to me! But I like the plant so I hope it decides to stick around :-)

Maybe Prince Charles wasn't labeled correctly? That isn't Charles. I've got Arabella, Durandii, Juuli and C. integrifolia and it doesn't match any of them either. Closest it looks to any of my clems is Betty Corning.

It looks similar to my Stand By Me clematis. A 3-ish ft non vining plant.

buyorsell - I do have a Betty Corning but it is a long way away on the other side of the house and it is definitely a climber and this is not. cab84 - the leaves look a bit like those on Stand by Me but the flower colour is a paler blue that in the pictures I saw, plus this one was not growing upright...

Unfortunately, when we were trying to show it to a gardening friend this morning DH found that the stem was broken off! We stuck the broken off bit into a pot in hopes that it might root....! I hope the clematis - whatever it is - survives from the root that is in the ground now!
