That color is stronger contrast, can work well. Depends how adventurous (blues) you want to be on the exterior of your home :)

Its navy I think its gonna look crisp and classy.

Thanks for the link my shutters were handmade so they have character and unfortunately the article doesn't like my type of shutters Lol. I've looked at replacing my shutters with vinyl shutters but I think they'll be top big for my house. I just don't think it will look right. That's why I opted to paint them and give them a fresh look.

Just a note, if you were to change the shutters, they would be fine if they were wider. Won't be too big.

I think Navy blue is the new black and would go great with your blue grey house color. Go to Sherwin Williams color visualizer and download a photo of your house and "try on" some colors. Try Naval Blue SW6244, Commodore SW6524, or Indigo SW6531. Good luck.

Danielle, part of the reason I posted that link was because, as I look at the front and side views of your house, it seems like your shutters, although you like them and feel they have character, seem too small - or lack visual "weight" (and a large part of that might have to do with the fact that they are made of small elements with large spacing). It seems like what you really want for your home is additional color and, depending on the materials on your home, you might be able to achieve additional color without having shutters at all. Vinyl siding and vinyl trim make painting a much more complicated issue, but if you have wood trim I think you have a lot of opportunities to bring in color to enhance the look of your home. If all or most of the materials and windows are vinyl, and you are set on having shutters, I think that true shutters with a more solid appearance, and mounted in an appropriate way so that they appear to be operable, would enhance the look of your home. True shutters should be sized as if they would close over the window, so they would not appear too big or heavy. The layering of a true shutter and the shadow lines really go a long way toward the final look of a house. That's what so attractive about two of the examples posted above, the house with the red shutters and red door as well as the house with the authentic blue shutters and red door.

Don't worry Danielle! You're shutters do have character. Sometimes the rules are meant to be broken, for sure! I carefully study the classic design rules, which I do absolutely love and respect, and then (stubbornly :)) break a few of them as I see fit!

Danielle, Another thought for pops of color would be to add some large window boxes. The boxes themselves could be painted, if you like, and flowers will add color. Here are a few examples. Although not the same style houses as yours, I think window boxes and shutters would relate in the same ways.

I like your paint choice. I think it looks great. Navy is hard to beat for classic, sleek, and sharp looking, and with your gray house and red door it is perfect. I am looking forward to seeing your finished product.

...and window boxes are not just for windows. Have fun with them. For instance, I think if you had two long window boxes across the width of your front porch, that would add some nice visual interest and color. You have that same instinct...you've started with the two small box planters on the porch wall.

No red shutters and Annie is right on! Never, ever steal away from the uniqueness of your front door by making your shutters resonate it.

I, too, think that the navy looks nice-and navy and red say "nautical" to me, for sure.
I like the info on the old house guy's site, but he definitely believes in a traditional look for shutters. Your shutters are completely decorative, but I think they work for your house. A lot of houses built in the mid century had those decorative shutters-and the shutters on your house look like they are from that era, even if they might not be. IMO, when they fit the style of the house itself, even if they might not fit the more traditional ideas of what size and shape a shutter should be, I think that it becomes a part of the architectural integrity of the house, and-also IMO-that trumps making the shutters more "old style" traditional. Your shutters might not be traditional, but they fit the style, and don't detract from it at all, IMO.

Another question. What color metal roofing would look best? Were looking to replace our old roof with a new metal roof just having trouble deciding color.

I would say a medium gray, not too dark because it will absorb heat, not too light because there wouldn't be enough contrast with your house's color.

re: your roof; we currently have a silver grey/galvanized roof. It looks great against our red brick and we have grey trim and same painted grey Hardie plank siding at the (many) gables which it all blends nicely together and the silver grey reflects the heat, which is important in summer here in Texas. I think we decided with charcoal its not too dark not too light.

Go with darker gray shutters with your pink/red door it will really look great

I already painted the shutters navy blue. Lol

Charcoal is a nice neutral color, so it should look nice.

I would paint those navy too :) Will accent the two roofs and tie in the shutters.

I agree with LB Interiors, but I think I would add the porch posts to the mix. I think it would help accentuate the shutters. That's because the downside of them being just "slats" is that they don't have much visual weight, even painted dark. So, a few more navy surfaces might not be a bad idea.

No I didn't paint the fascia. Were thinking of painting the foundation and steps charcoal because that's the color metal roof were getting. Didn't think about painting anything else navy. I didn't want it to overpower the house.
