I would be super nervous, as a guest, to sleep under those shelves!

There appear to be two office spaces here: one in this room, and another in the next room? Why? Couldn’t these be consolidated? The wall spanning shelving unit to the right might be better utilized so that the three hanging shelves aren’t needed. What is the lounge chair facing? There seems to be a lack of order in the room. I would start by removing everything from the room (except the large shelving unit), and then centering the daybed on that back wall. Then assess what is needed where (and why?) before adding anything back into the space.

Hotel for guests? Unless I was seven years old, I'd be inclined to find the nearest Mariott : )

It's a shame, because with a walk out and enclosed porch beyond , perhaps reducing the number of purposes for the space and a major de clutter, could make you much happier.

In the meantime..........lose the shelf unit above the day bed, and all the banners . then work on what is stored and ask......WHY you are storing it

I would suggest removing the shelving that is over the daybed. Also what looks like a part of a door ? That door looking piece in corner next to daybed, could be moved out if possible.

Daybed is nice but frame makes it seem heavy and dark and is it comfortable?

Something like this could lighten the space. It comes in a bunch of colors. Good reviews. You can get a nice comfortable mattress for it.

Can that wall shelving unit thing do double duty as a desk? If so, get rid of the desk that is in there. Move the bed towards the middle of the wall it is on. Set it up with some big pillows so it doubles as a couch. Add some small end tables with lamps or wall sconces with light on either side of the bed. You need some lamps in there to help lighten it up. Add a large area rug. Maybe a couple of chairs across from the bed.

Can you give us a sketch of the floor plan? That might help too.

Do you use the daybed during the day to watch TV?

The easy chair and the keyboard are in the way of the traffic path between the 2 doors, which I would leave free. Slide the desk unit to the right along the wall so that it is under the wall shelves, which do need to be rearranged. Move the day bed to the spot vacated by the desk. We haven't seen that part of the room in a picture so not sure what else is there. Put the keyboard, up against the non-opening part of the slider, facing the other room.

When do use the easy chair? Maybe watching TV? Let us know and we will suggest a better position in the room.

Your books are unattractively displayed but we can work on that when we have the major pieces of furniture in the right spots.

Also...if you have guests in there often, you might stick a couple of these on the wall. I did that in one of my guest rooms. You don’t really see them when they are not in use but they are handy for guests if there is not a closet in the room.

If you want more privacy in this room you can get window film that looks like frosting and put it on the doors from about the middle to the floor. It’s cheap and easy to put in. You will still get light through the top panes, but the frosting will give privacy for anyone in the room.

As far as your books, if you want to display them all then you do have quite a bit of room already in your office. Remove any picture frames or decor items, and fill those 2 shelves with your books. You will need bookends. Something very simple .

We don’t use the daybed because it’s too messy. I have to Marie Kondo the room! Use the easy chair a lot for reading and laptop use. Thinking of moving out the TV as no one uses it there. I’m going to take a lot of these tips & send updated pics. So appreciate all your comments and suggestions

If you put your desk under the wall shelves then they will not look out of place, and they are the natural place to put your books. I would not take them down until you try this option.

You say the room feels dark so move your most-used furniture closer to the sliders to take advantage of what light you have.

I think the bed could be great if not under the bookshelves, made up nicely with pillows and a nice spread. As is right now the pieces all seem like they just ended up in the room. FYI my office also has this feel!

Take everything off the daybed wall. Rehome the shelves, books, pennant, etc. Get a great art piece there--poster with a subject and feeling you like--landscape with sky since it's a basement room. Add a rug and a really nice tailored daybed cover and back cushions in same fabric. No small pillows or bitsy things around the room since offices get overrun with stuff anyway. Keep it simple. Get a modern lamp for the desk that can be turned to use as a reading lamp for the daybed. If you must, get a couple small nesting tables you can keep tucked away but pull out for guests or next to big chair.

Check out online museum stores for framed art works from their collections. Get one that fills that wall. Then choose a rug and daybed cover that harmonize with the art work. Consider a simple patterned rug with a short pile that can take a lot of wear and tear. Wayfair and Overstock have some good rugs, daybed covers, etc. Good luck!
