If you paint the garage door gray, it will appear as a dark hole from a little distance away. Keeping it white lets it blend with the rest of the house and doesn't fool the eye.

I would keep the garage door white (and you didn’t ask about this but I’ll throw it in anyway: and I would paint the front door a ‘feature color‘)
