For a couple of years I've been reading that wood-finish cabinets are back on trend. I think I'd leave the cabinets and invest that $5000 in drawer bases for the cabinet run across from the work zones. Use the existing bases in the garage or donate to HFH--or if you have a handy DIY person in your life, maybe all the single drawers could be used to retrofit the cabinets between the fridge and cooktop, then use bases with wider, deeper, drawers on the long wall. Definitely replace backsplash and tile counters.

A few years ago, gel-staining wood cabinets was popular and could be done DIY, if you just want a change. If you're keeping the island counter, darker cabinets would coordinate well.
