Growing Tomatoes

Green tomatoes falling to the ground.

I am growing Roma tomatoes, and have been thrilled at the number of fruit setting on every plant. They are all in the ground, and the plants look healthy and green, and continue to set new fruit on newer branches. I was gone for three days, and returned to find 5 of the tomatoes had fallen to the ground. I don’t see any damage to the fruits or the plants. Given the number of fruit I have growing, this is a drop in the bucket, so I am not worried in the least. I am just curious whether this is something the plants will do, or if I need to protect the rest of the fruit from a likely critter trying to share the bounty.

What variety of tomato and were they turning red or still green.

They were all still green and rock hard. Unfortunately, the problem has accelerated. Checking tonight, I barely have a single tomato left. All gone without a trace. Many more branches are eaten, as well, but primarily the fruits are gone—even those that were buried beneath layers of branches and leaves. I am shopping for industrial electrified fencing for next year.
