What would you do (kitchen)?

What would you do? A) Remove sofit, upper cabinets and paint lowers white (new hinges, new knobs), Install butcher bloc counter type of diy makeover or B) rip it all out and get an Ikea kitchen?

I would rip it off, not sure about IKEA kitchen. I would look for deal for wood cabinets. May be you can paint base cabinets and get up to date upper cabinets doors?

Hi A. R. Beale: if budget runs to it then yes, I would start over. Regarding IKEA kitchens - they are good value for money especially if you are assembling and installing yourself and I particularly like the 25 year warranty. Installed this one (including the hallway cabinets), with a little bit of customization, in a suite for tenants/guests:

It depends. How long are you planning to stay in the house? How does the kitchen layout work for you, and how long have you lived in the house and used the kitchen so far? How are the appliances? Do they need replacing? Do you want/need a dishwasher? Is there another kitchen storage space, such as a pantry, if you remove the upper cabinets?

What's the flooring like? What are the adjacent rooms with the different flooring, and what are your plans for those rooms?

If circumstances favoured dealing with the current kitchen, I would leave the soffit and the upper cabinets (and the hinges), paint the the cabinets after deciding on the flooring situation, replace the light fixture (is there just the one fixture, and is that adequate?), replace countertops but probably would get laminate instead of butcher block, especially around the sink.

We put an Ikea kitchen in our new house, and also in the granny suite over the garage. We love them : ) .

    B.

But I would start with the flooring. In your images I see three types, vinyl, hardwood, and carpet. I would take the hardwood throughout even if that meant I couldn’t afford something else I wanted.

What are your budget and your needs? Do you want to change your layout?

I dont see how you are going to change just the top to Ikea cabinets. I think it would look weird.

I have a similar situation and we decided to reface the top so that they look full overlay and add some drawers, then change the tops to Ikea cabinets (both will be shaker in our case), and go to the ceiling. This way, we have no structural changes and it reduces the price while you get rid of outdated cabinets. Sure, you could change the floor, but it does not look so terrible, so it is not the priority for me.
