if in fact.. it is a weeping tree/plant .. usually.. you have to train it as high as you want.. and then allow it to weep down from there ... though there are exceptions to that general rule ...

that was most likely a shipping stake.. it is of no further use ...

first you need to either plant it.. or repot it .. and then you ought to worry about training it.. after it gets over that stress ... keep it in shade for a few weeks after repotting ... anif planting.. hold it until the next good planting time.. wherever you may be ... [i am supposing AZ is variable as to planting time]

just because you get a plant.. august might not be the best time to be messing with the roots ...

Ty for your answer. I did move it this morning out of sun and as far as planting, am waiting til sept. As far as transporting stake are you saying I could possibly replace it with longer stake and then when reaches height I want it then remove it? Would that mean if I want height 10 or 12 ft would need 12 ft stakes. Don’t mean to sound dumb just clarifying.

I bought this now even though not planting til sept because it was in a 5 gallon pot and that’s all I can manage. I also bought a 5 gallon bottle tree that will be planted in sept. I don’t want to wait for the planting rush in sept because not very many companies sell 5 gallon potted trees and I dont move fast enough to beat others to the store. Lol

Do you think I should remove the stake now? I read somewhere that stakes make plants weaker, although we still need to go thru monsoons. Bottle tree has a stake too. Is it true they need to be thru the weather on their own to build strength?

I can't read the label on your Acacia. Could you tell us the full name? Whatever, it's been in that small pot for much longer than it should have been.

Also, when you say "bottle tree", is that Brachychiton populneus, or the one called bottle tree in Australia, Brachychiton rupestris?

Hello ty for asking. It’s acacia pendula and brachychiton populneus.

Acacia pendula is a beautiful large tree, one of my favourites. I hope you'll be planting it in the ground, not pots. In the ground, I'd plant as is, without stakes. Even if the top breaks off, it will replace itself naturally, with many new branches. Fully grown, they resemble weeping willows in habit.

Since I can't see your B. populneus, hard to say. If it's as tall and spindly as your Acacia, I'd be inclined to leave it loosely tied to a stake until it's established, maybe up to 12 months. But if it has a sturdy trunk, just plant it without the stake. They're one of the toughest trees I know...

Ty Yes still have the Brachychiton here is a pic lot of leaves dropped during summer heat but lot came back. Also here is a pic of a diff acacia planted last Oct I know they are planted close together but ill work it out somehow. I think the saying re trees 1st year sleep, 2nd year creep, 3rd year leap really applies lol Still trying to find something for west and east sides to block light and neighbors out. Hard to find the 3gallon potted trees right now. Do have bouganvilla on both sides and a orange trumpet that leaves dry up in summer but always recover. Have a yellow bell to plant in oct too lol
