ants in gardenia container

My potted gardenia (zone 7a) has these weird globs of sticky white goo that are either being deposited by the ants or are attracting the ants. The goo is under some leaves or where the leaves join a stem. Tomorrow I will but a Terro Liquid ant bait in the pot, hoping to obliterate the ant colony that appears to be living in the gardenia's soil.

My question is whether there is a soil flush I can also use to encourage the ants to move on.

Thanks for any help you can offer or any resources you can point me to, so I can read about the white goo.
