Why do you have such a large pediment on this door at all?

Lose the pediment at the top. Please. It's out of scale and pretentious. . Unless changing skimpy base skirts, window casings, leave well enough alone with regards to door casings.

Might try painting trim and door the wall color after you remove the “top hat”. That will make the problem less noticeable.

Can I see a photo of the other doors?

If you want to keep this trim, the only way to do this correctly is to remove all of the trim and move the door jam over to the left and center it on the wall.

Options

1. Leave as your hubby did

2. Move door - center - will still leave some blunt cut, but will be the same on both sides - expensive

3 Reduce the door size - depending on current size you could make the door and doorway narrower, allowing for full detail above the door - expensive

4. Attempt to make things visually less noticeable.

I would probably opt for #4 and blunt cut both sides of the top trim on the top hat so that it was the same angles on both sides.

I would sand and finish the edges so that it fit snugly, but did not require caulk. It is difficult to get the caulk really nice with all the angles. The other option is to create a template of each side and cut painters tape 1/16" from the edge of the template, place the tape on the wall before caulking - smooth the lightest bead possible and then pull the tape.

I agree that I would rethink the pediment. If you have done all of the other doors already, I would do what Jennifer Hogan suggested above....

IMO that top piece is way out of proportion to the door but honestly you will be the only person who notices this and especially in a space where it is mostly bedrooms

Thank you all. While I understand this may not be designer appropriate trim, I absolutely love it on the other doors. Our house is simple and isnt grand but this makes me happy. we are amateurs but i feel my husband did an amazing job on the other doors. Of course our master bedroom has to have these off centered doors. I guess we could do a simpler trim for this door but it wouldnt match the rest. Heres a photo of the other doors (not painted yet)

@binavarg - There are only 2 things I consider when designing my home. The first thing I consider is how well things function based on how I live in my home. (I live alone now, would have considered other occupants as well when I wasn't alone). The second thing I consider is if my choices bring me joy. I want to feel joy every time I walk into any room in my home or look at my furniture or art or walls.

I think your trim looks wonderful and if it makes you happy that is really the only thing that matters.

You asked for opinions, which each person gave. If you love it, why ask? It will look a lot better when caulked and painted. Just be happy.

Thank you Jennifer Hogan I really appreciate that so much. Flo Mangan- I asked whats the best way for this to look better given the awkward spacing around the door. Right now the right side catches my eye and I asked him to cut it further. He (who knows way more than me) said he didnt think it would look right if he did and asked me to post on houzz for what others thought the best way to handle it would be.

You doors do look good taken as a whole.

I have doors that off center, squeezed into a corner. The trim is cut to fit the space.

I think your husband did a good job. Leave well enough alone. After a while, you will not see the less than an inch off-set.

Thank you houssaon. So theres no other way to cut that trim at the top to give it the more slanted look so both sides of trim match?

Ok. My problem with the cap is the large flat piece. So what I suggest is find some additional trim piece for under top molding or above lower part to keep proportions looking better.

You can cut both sides the same, they will be different than the other doors, but probably less noticeable than having the two sides different.

If Hubby is really good he may be able to create the illusion of a bigger angle by reducing the lower portions of the trim topper to the width of the flat piect and only angling the top piece or two.
