13'10" wide kitchen with skinny island?

Our kitchen is 13'10" by 25' with relatively old cabinets, we plan to redo the kitchen and have an island added to the center and dining table included at the other end of the kitchen. With a width of 13'10", our island will probably be skinny.

Option 1: U shaped perimeter cabinet/countertop, the island will be 27" by 9' if we follow the 48/42 inch rule of kitchen aisle. So 48" aisle on the fridge side and 42" on cabinet side. (apologize for using IKEA planner screenshot, I didn't find a better free online program to do the planning)

Option 2: Wall cabinets (12" or 13" deep) on the right, so basically L shape plus a 39" by 9' island. (IKEA does not have a 12" cabinet option, so I used the 15" ones here.

Which one do you think is better? We are also open to other plans. Thank you.

I prefer Option #2, but without the upper cabinets along that wall. Do you need them? They will be floating in space if not anchored by the lowers, and I'd be worried that people would bump their heads on them because there's no lower cabinet to guide their walking path. I prefer the roomier island with more space to walk around it.

As an alternative, can you create a peninsula instead of an island, where the peninsula comes off the right hand wall? It would be a modified Option #1 - U-shape + peninsula instead of island. If you want to put your sink there, it will be better for it to face the dining area where it's more social.

Thank you mama goose and Brooklyn. We also like option 2 more, although the amount of countertop space in option 1 is very tempting. Moving the stove is a very good point and thanks for considering the trash location. There is a window at the bottom center, sorry for not showing it clearly. Since it is a window, can we still have a 9 ft island? We would like to have maybe 18-24 inch of overhang on the left end of the island to allow 2-3 people sitting there during meal prep or for a quick bite. We also like to the idea of a large sink in the island, but would like to understand why you suggest we switch to a smaller sink. Thanks again.

It’s a big space. You hint at the seating and want a smaller sink there also. I would eliminate the wall cabs behind the island . Have 4 dedicated seated spots on the island . Keep a moderate sized single bowl main sink on the island and install a 2nd sink on 13 ft wall removing the big dbl bowls sink and reducing the width of pantry a bit. Seated people can unseat themselves and use that area on 13 ft wall for their incidental use. Your work triangle will pivot between sink on island and fridge and range on left wall and be improved for you. The wall spaces down near table can often handle wall cabs w glass doors up to ceiling w molding : sometimes recessed as well. But were those wall cabs that critical ??? I think they are impeding a better plan for you.

You need 15" knee space and 24" elbow room for each seat, so your skinny island will seat only one on the end. In addition you need 60" between island seating and table seating, so I don't think 9' will work. I suggested a smaller prep sink, since it's needed only to rinse foods before prepping, and you have the larger sink on the perimeter. Also, smaller sink leaves more counter for prep.

I like herbflavor's suggestion to omit the shallow cabinets on the bottom wall and put the seating on the back of the island. You could put a ROTS pantry beside the fridge or beside the DW, or both, to make up for lost storage on the island and the wall. I'd leave the sinks as drawn--clean-up on perimeter and prep on the island. Island could be longer without a seat on the end, but you still need space for table seating and traffic.

Seating around island seems to take too much space, I will never have 4 seats around the island. The table is right there for that purpose. My thought was maybe 1-2 non-cooks around the island occasionally. Sorry for misleading.

May I know why an island will give a soaky wet floor?

Never say never. You build it they will come. Table is there but in a certain way ....far off. If people are in the space they will want to be closer in. Not at all times but enough to make the seating a feature .... take away the wall cabs and add pendant lites and nice stools. This will also boost the value of your finished project . For your space avail the island should be more.

I have to agree with herbflavor again. When my kids were younger I wanted everyone out of the kitchen so I could work in peace. Likewise when putting the finishing touches on a dinner for guests, I wanted them out of the kitchen, allowing me to concentrate. Now my kids are older and I can't shoo them out anymore. They prefer eating meals at the island, and I have become accustomed to having company in the kitchen.

I think LWO was referring to water on the floor in the first plan, with no countertop behind the sink in the shallow island. There should be no problem with the island sink in the other plans.
