We have HVAC system that is closed off improperly.

So we bought this house about 6 years ago and now we're looking into a major renovation. One thing that I noticed was that the HVAC system was really poorly housed in. There's no return ducts anywhere.

We plan on gutting the entire basement. We have a back split home and this part of the basement is the lowest level in the house. Just focusing on this section we want to remodel and start from scratch.

How should we go about remodeling this section of basement? There's a bedroom, a washroom, a laundry section, water softener, water heater and furnace all housed down on this level.

I've included some photos for you to view to see the existing problem. How can this be resolved?
