Do some hosta need division to retain vigor?

I’m asking this question because I’m mystified why my Niagara Falls stopped being an enormous specimen. I posted here before about it when I noticed it no longer was huge. It was suggested I check the roots. Well I did last fall, and didn’t notice anything amiss. I moved it over a few feet and replanted. But this year I see no improvement. Other hosta in the bed are thriving.

Do I need to divide it ?

Give 10-10-10 fertilizer instead. Hostas don't need dividing.....ever

in your zone.. dont go heavy on fert ... only enough that it is used up.. before the cold starts setting in ... we want then going to sleep in fall.. not all juiced up on fert ...

im surprised you didnt find something when you dug it up ... rotted crown.. or tree roots.. or whatever ... but digging would have been my suggestion ... may as well find out.. instead of guess ...

but.. since you did dig it up.. you set it back ... its probably growing roots you really cant see .. and it should show the result next season ... be patient ...

I my humble experience, when a hosta is not performing well I assume it needs a different location or it’s entangled in tree roots. I have several in this situation now that may not get dug up or moved until next spring.
