What is in the inside of the area? Is that the way the entrance is to remain with no overhang? What sort of entrance door is going in? Single door? Single Door with sidelites? Double door? If the interior allows I would put another 2-wide casement unit there.

The area lacking windows will be a pantry. I agree with your suggestion as well. Contractor is concerned windows will interfere with my pantry space but I will work around it. Something just don’t look right. I am waiting on the door to be delivered it is a single door...no sidelines. Overhang was another thought I had but can’t pinpoint. I am trying to find software that will allow me to add windows/overhang to visualize. So disturbing spending so much money and now in doubt. I have learned lots about renovations unfortunately costly learning experience. Thanks for your help.

I'm not a pro and don't know your budget but I would want to optimize that whole door wall with some sort of covered front porch.

Thank you for your note. Unfortunately I am so over budget I can’t enlarge porch at this point as I think that cost will be substantial. My bad I didn’t review updated renderings prior to construction. Unfortunately I was fully confident in contractor and shouldn’t of assumed everyone has same design sense. Not blaming anyone but myself but this clearly don’t look right. Now I am just trying to make it look somewhat normal. I told my contractor a window or something needs to be added cuz it looks like we added on from a trailer.

Not a pro - but I would say a portico more than a window is needed. The portico would help to balance off that wall.

Hi Tammy. Yes, you should have contacted a designer first. But, lesson learned.

Option 1 Add windows. That depends on what is going on inside.

Option 2 Landscaping. You can easily add tall junipers or other to that area to fill it in. No one will ever notice that something is missing.

The idea of landscaping for that area makes a lot of sense. If that area is a pantry, you probably don't want a window because light and food storage aren't usually a good mix, long term. I'm sure you'll find a solution that meets your budget and needs. I feel for you because we redid our front steps a decade ago and I missed a great opportunity to optimize the area. I also learned the expensive lesson that contractors aren't designers. Home renos aren't easy nor cheap!

That appears to me to look like your main entrance and it dumps you into a kitchen and directly alongside a pantry. Is this correct?

IMO the best would be to extend the porch across that space add a couple of bright colored chairs and if space allows some nice pots of plants and a piece of exterior art on that wall. Unless you need windows in that space and then of course add windows. IMO there is nothing less attractive than asphalt all across the front of a home so maybe a shot from further back so I can see why it is there . I see the garage so not at all sure the need for that other piece. Then get to work on landscaping and IMO unless you love the country cottage look no window boxes.

I definitely wouldn't add windows to a pantry. I think the porch is the best idea, but I totally understand going over-budget. Maybe a white trellis against the house to break up the siding color and some landscaping in front?

Add a couple of lattices to fill the space and grow vines in the summer. Not sure of the color, white might look nice too.

The white trim in that area (both horizontal and vertical) is making the front of your house look very chopped up. Paint it to match the siding.

Add landscaping. The lower level of landscaping should be similar all the way across the house, so the eye travels across the front of the house without stopping. Fill in the upper area with a combination of some evergreens and a lighter-feeling deciduous shrub/tree that touches the window.

No need for windows in your pantry, or a big porch. Add a fabric awning later if you like - much less expensive than extending the roof.

Even a large light and house numbers on that side of the door would add visual weight to balance out the empty space.
