Take EVERY single thing off mantel and table tops, and take another picture. Include the wall opposite the window.

Your dark and heavy pieces don't work with the cocktail table., or a coastal feel, ........ we can't see the rest well.

The "empty" wall especially. Stand further back....... stand at the fireplace as well. Your seating is either not well arranged, or is too big and bulky for the space.

After that? Try the sofa on the empty wall under the picture, move the two chairs to window wall with a table between them, and a lamp. Put the cocktail table in front of the sofa on the "empty" wall.

Until more pictures? Can't tell what is what. Too crowded and cluttered : )

You have a lot of nice things in the space and I feel your pain. While I'm no expert, the room needs some warmth added like you said, perhaps consider bookcases on each side of the fireplace, or adding wainscoting to this room? Replace the coffee table with a round glass and metal to go with fireplace screen, and similar for that side table. So easy to spot stuff in someone else's room, yet struggle with my own....lol. Hi @JAN MOYER - I took your suggestion and cleared out all of the "stuff" cluttering the room and have uploaded fresh pictures. Admittedly the sofa and chairs are too big and chunky for the room, but I love them. Move the sofa to the ;LEFT wall, opposite the windows. Put the two chairs and round table in front of the window. Add a lamp between those chairs. Do that, take another picture and come back. Put the cocktail table in front of the sofa,, leave 15 inches and pretend it isn't white: )

Have you tried the sofa and big picture on the wall facing the windows? The two chairs can be angled where the sofa is now with that glass top table between them. Put the other round table left of the FP and get matching lamps for it and the piece on the other side. Pick up some pieces of coral and use them on top of the chest. Add a tray of seashells on the coffee table. Mount a cool piece of driftwood above the FP. If you want to paint, it looks like Sherwin Williams Sea Spray could work well with the painting and your furniture. Think about a sisal or sea grass rug.

PS.......... Turn the rug 90 degrees when you do this.

Have you tried just leaning the art at the mantel? Pull the bottom forward a bit and lean. DON'T use a picture hanger.

I like the idea that others have proposed to put the sofa under the boat picture on the wall opposite the window and move the two chairs with a table between them in front of the window. From the bit we can see of what's around this room, that seems like that would give you the best flow.

Or if you want to make it feel like a somewhat separate, cozy destination, you could try putting a chair on either side of the fireplace, move the sofa in a bit towards the fireplace in its current orientation and put a long, narrow console table behind it. it appears the front door may open into this room so the console could also be a useful place to drop keys, etc. a couple of matching lamps on the console could also bring light to the couch for reading. In this type of layout, I'd also consider a round glass coffee table between the couch and chairs.

As for decor, if you try the idea of chairs flanking the fireplace, maybe matching circle mirrors on the walls above them and some small mismatched side tables. I liked the artsy driftwood above the mantle that someone else mentioned.

There is nothing wrong with the size of your seating. The tables could be improved upon. Here is an alternate layout with the sofa against the wall. Please do not place the sofa so that someone has to 'hurdle' into your living room. It's so not inviting to guests.

Were you just referring to layout or changing them altogether? I am open to replacing the coffee table - or refurbishing it?

Thank you @Shoemaker! @everdebz ... no, no preference on where chairs go. Just do not want sofa on the window wall. When the sofa is against one wall and the chairs paired up against either the wall or the windows, then it leaves this large open space that flows from the front door into the dining room and just feels blank. I will try to move the furniture both ways this weekend and take pictures to show each option. Thanks again everyone! SUPER HELPFUL!!!

Feels "blank"??? Because it has nor real decoration. It feels too cold. Blue and gray and white? Needs a lot of texture to feel great. It doesn't need more furniture.

Clutter and doo dads aren't really decoration. The first thing to "go? ? The icy white cocktail table. If you want it? Paint it! Even a dark navy would help. Pillows with texture, an ACCENT color......

Get your layout for the room first. All of your tables are great individually. The stark white table has great lines, but it kind of stands out in the room with no connection to anything. Your tables should not match, but they all must play nice together. But again, that's down the line. Get the general layout first.

I find that rooms look well put together when you bring in all the major material elements in some form or fashion.

I just had a thought-- if you don't use your fireplace, you could actually put your tv on the hearth. It wouldn't be a pretty as your firescreen. But it also wouldn't dominate the room the way a mantelpiece mounting would. The you could get another piece of art for above the mantel.

Now you want to warm it a bit..............not with clutter. Bring back a few pillow. Add some panels to the window.

Blue and gray are COOL. You need texture. You need an accent color. Just one will do. Keep the curtain panels white, and triple them up if ready made, both sides. Add some WARM METAL.

The cocktail table and lamps is a good place for that.

Turned the rug back around - figured out how to lay it so that all front feet of furniture are on board and evenly spaced! Will start shopping for texture in pillows/throws. A little confused on the curtains over the window though? A wall heater vent is exactly below the right hand side between the floor and bottom frame of the window. Would like to incorporate a pop of burgundy in the room - there is some in the boat picture. Husband would like to see a clock above the fireplace - perhaps a nautical clock?
