Fuchsia Photo Share!

Hello everyone! The weather has cooled down and the fuchsias are back in bloom in my neighborhood! I thought it might be fun to have a fuchsia photo share.

My grand total of fuchsias amounts to one, but it is my pride and joy : ). I’ve always wanted to try growing fuchsias and I was really happy when I found my ‘Dollar Princess’ fuchsia at Lowes this June. I didn’t think I would be able to keep it alive as I heard they were fussy plants, but after a few drops of MiracleGro and some fervent prayers it is blooming again!

I can’t wait to see your fuchsias!

Beautiful plant, blooming so nicely. Although I enjoy the beautiful blooms, I usually avoid this plant because they like water. But if I saw one as nice as yours, I’d probably cave.

However, I do have fuchsia gartenmeister bonestet in the ground, it’s about 4 feet high. It has a larger blue green leaf than your fuchsia. It has not bloomed too much lately, so I gave it a shot of fertilizer. Years ago I didn’t want the plant anymore so I chopped it to the ground. It grew back just fine. It’s a tough fuchsia.

I really love fuschia and being new to zone 9 am learning about them. I’ve killed more than I have been able to keep :( I had such a wonderful hanging basket last spring that I killed . So far I’ve kept 4 alive , two actually happy .

    Here they are . I’m sorry I don’t know their names .

I love the pink and blue combo I have here .

I’d like to have more but it seems they have sold out around here.

Thank you so much socks! You’re ‘Gartenmeister Bonstedt’ fuchsia sounds wonderful! I heard it is the best fuchsia for attracting hummingbirds, do you find this to be true? The hummingbirds have hardly touched my fuchsia. They seem more interested in the red and yellow hummingbird feeder we put for them on the other side of the arbor. My sister says it’s like McDonald’s versus spinach salad. Haha, I guess they prefer McDonald’s ; ).

Wow! Your fuchsias are gorgeous Lilyfinch! I wish I could find those color combinations around here. I went to Lowes last weekend to find another fuchsia in a different color to hang next to my ‘Dollar Princess’ fuchsia, but they are all sold out of fuchsias around here too. Could you tell me the name of the blue flower in your last picture? It is stunning!

    Have a wonderful day everyone!

Hi Lilyfinch! Thank you so much! I I’m gonna be checking my local Lowes and Home Depot to see if they have any. They would be perfect to plant along my backyard fence.

From what I’ve seen, the hummingbirds only resort to the fuchsia when the feeder is empty. They’re picky little fellas ; ). They go crazy for the autumn sage though. The nice thing is that it blooms non-stop from spring till frost with little maintenance (and sometimes even through the winter if it is mild) and it is drought tolerant. Perfect for a lazy gardener like me ; ).

Your fuchsia and hummingbird photos are so beautiful! Is the pink and white fuchsia the Windchimes White-White one? I think it may be correctly labeled but has an inaccurate description. Another commenter mentioned that they also ordered one of these fuchsias and that theirs had pink sepals and stamens too. To be honest I prefer the delicate pink and white blend over the pure white. It is a really pretty color combination.

This spring I wasn't able to visit the garden centers due to covid, but next spring I will make sure to go at the start of the fuchsia season. I can't wait!

    Have a nice evening,

Hummingbirds are rarely attracted to double flowers (the purple corolla in the last fuchsia photo) as they seldom contain any nectar. If you want to grow fuchsias to attract hummers then stick with the single, more tubular styles like Gartenmeister or most of the hardy, magellanica types. These can be grown outdoors year round in climates zone 7 or above and will bloom from spring all the way through until a hard frost. A couple in my garden were still producing flowers in January this year!! They also tend to be much more drought and sun tolerant than the basket type fuchsias.

Thank you gardengal! That is very good to know. I was wondering why they were not taking nectar from my fuchsia. The fuchsia that I have is a hardy fuchsia that I put a hanging basket attachment on. The funny thing is that many years ago we purchased a couple of those hanging basket fuchsias and the hummingbirds went crazy for them until the plants died from my lack of care. I don't think we had any other flowers that attracted hummingbirds at the time, so that was probably why. It is amazing that your fuchsias bloomed through the winter! I sure hope I can find some of the magellanica fuchsias at the garden centers around here. They are so beautiful! They look like morning dewdrops. Thanks again for your help!

    Have a lovely evening,

Damask , are you in California!? I just saw the gartenmeister one at Lowe’s . In Menifee but I assume the whole area gets them . I have one in my back yard, doing poorly, and I think it’s the same one. I have terrible soil I’ve come to realize. I need to help the guy out . It’s shrunk in size and just looks so unhappy . Today I’ll spread some manure and see if that helps .

Hi Lilyfinch! I am in the Bay Area. We may be heading to Lowes this weekend, so if we go I'll make sure to keep an eye out for them. Thank you so much for letting me know! Perhaps in late fall or early spring you can try re-planting your fuchsia. I used to plant my flowers without amending the soil first, but the soil in my yard is hard like a rock if we don't till it or add compost. For the past few winters when the plants are dormant, I have been digging up the plants that I planted directly into the hard soil, my dad has tilled the soil underneath, and I have mixed in compost then re-planted the plants. They usually bounce back in the spring with increased vigor and blooms. When my dad is too busy to till, I use a stand up garden tiller (Ames brand) that we bought from Home Depot and work some compost or manure into the soil around the plants.

    Have a wonderful evening,

My poor fuchsia is dying in this heatwave. I moved it to full shade under my patio roof in preparation for the hundred degree weather, but it still wilted away : (. Everything is frying in this August heat.

Hey damask !!! I forgot all about this thread. Did your plant make it ?

Mine are looking sad too . Finally cooler temps coming in and I think I’ll hit it with a little miracle grow . I did find another one of that orange one with the long name at Home Depot and put it in my pot where I keep a feeder hanging in. I did have mandevilla vine but hummers never used the flowers and it was getting so so big .

Wonder if the stores will get some for our “winter “ ?

by the way , the one in the back garden died , I don’t go back there bc it’s kinda behind the pool equipment and when I checked on it , it had been long gone . Whoops 😬

Hi @Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca! Unfortunately the plant kicked the bucket : (. I'm not quite sure how to protect fuchsias from the late summer heat. I put it in the shade and made sure the soil was moist, but it was probably 90 degrees even in the shade. I was so bummed, especially since it was just about to burst into bloom. I think I'll try again in the springtime though. I don't think I've seen fuchsias for sale in the winter, but I could be mistaken. I tend to see them the most in April-June. I think next summer when the temps skyrocket I'll keep the fuchsia inside next to a fan.

It's kind of chilly outside today. The cold weather came kind of suddenly this year. I think your fuchsias will perk up with the cooler weather. You have some beautiful varieties! The miracle grow is a good idea, it will encourage more blooms. I used miracle grow African violet fertilizer, because it was all I had. Surprisingly, it liked it! : )

Have a lovely day, and please post pictures of your fuchsias when they are in bloom, they are so beautiful!

This was the first year in a long time that the heatwave didn't kill my fuchsias. Looking forward to cool season flowers!
