design dilemma with floors

My living room and dining area/kitchen are connected by a wide opening and you step up two steps from living room to dining area. My living room has laminate oak colored floors and I would love to go with wood floors (luxury vinyl plank possibly) in a little bit darker color in the kitchen/dining area. I know this would look real bad if both rooms were on the same level but since the dining area/kitchen is up two steps I thought maybe It would look okay. It will be a few years before I’m ready to change out my living room floor so any design suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Vinyl flooring has a self-life of 18 months. That means if you want to get more of the same product to replace the laminate you have to buy it ALL AT ONCE or you will have the same problem...in reverse.

If your current living/kitchen flooring is still in "OK" shape, I would suggest you gather enough finances to do it all at once. We've seen DOZENS and DOZENS of Houzzers complain, "Help! Home Depot Discontinued my vinyl/laminate/etc! Now I can't complete my home".

Honest. I'm also a bit concerned about putting 'wood look' product in areas where STONE or TILE is normally seen. The problem comes when you discover you can't purchase more of the same and NOW you have a big issue because you don't want to do 'fake wood' up against 'fake wood'. But the living room will look weird in a stone/tile look vinyl...so now what do you do?

Purchase everything right now....or wait to do it all at once.

Another option- if you’d like to do something now and something later consider using two differing materials. For example wood in the living and dining and slate or tile in the kitchen is very typical. If you use two materials make them obviously different from one another rather than a wood and wood look

To put 2 different woods next to each other even if they are separated by 2 steps will be confusing for the eye and none of them will look great because they will be competing with each other.

Maybe you can put tile in your kitchen ?
Or a carpet in your living room before you decide to change the flooring ?

Do you have pictures of the actual floors right now ?

No the kitchen/dining room floors have all been removed and my living room floor is covered due to the renovation. I’ll see if I can find pictures of the floors in my photos.

This is how they look right now and how the steps are between the two areas.

And here’s a picture of my living room floor. And my dog. Lol

The picture helps. No, that step is not sufficient to support 2 different wood looks. Do it all the same or make one wood and the other a stone look.

Totally. You need either 2 different material that will complement each other oe the same wood.
I do phone consultation if ever you need to validate clients material and shopping list.
