Fireplace redo ideas needed

last modified: 6 years ago

We are buying this lake house. This photo is from the listing. We’d like to redo the fireplace as it is the focal point of the family room. We are definitely getting rid of the strip lights. We’re thinking about mounting the TV above the mantle. What should we do with that vaulted ceiling/wall? The ledge at the top of the fireplace chase is about 10 inches and is a dust collector (yuck) that can be seen from the stairs/upstairs level. Built ins along sides of fireplace? Or a set of drawers? Raised hearth or leave as is?

Thank you in advance for your ideas!

Maybe add some stone or brick around the opening of the fireplace and a beefier mantel. Stone brick or shiplap could go all the way up and incorporate electric for TV to be mounted.

Thank you. I like the idea of Stone all the way up. I just worry about the expense. Here are additional photos of the room. We feel the best place for TV is above the fireplace due to the staircase and the wall of windows.

Also, the wall to the left of the windows is being removed to make the family room larger. Length of room to fireplace will be approx 25 feet

Consider placing TV on the wall opposite the FP, under the sconces and arranging a sofa and some swivel chairs like this with the sofa facing the view with walk space behind it. Place 2-4 swivel chairs so they can turn to TV, FP or sofa for conversation.

Thank you. To clarify... are you saying the FP is behind the sofa? In other words, put the sofa in front on the FP? I’m sorry but I’m not sure what you are referring to when you say sconces.

Sofa floats facing the view as theirs is, perpendicular to their cabinet with TV on top. Stairs will be behind it, but allow for a traffic path between the sofa and stairs so people cam pass through the room without interrupting anything. TV goes on the wall opposite the fireplace where the two lights/sconces are mounted high on the wall to shine down. Put a low credenza below the TV that 25% wider than the TV is. Set the TV on a swivel base or wall mount it on an articulated arm. Then chairs, especially swivels and swivel-glider-recliners, can be worked in at the window or two with the FP behind them and two with the TV behind them. They can turn to the view, to converse with sofa sitters, to watch the fire or TV. Keep your seating properly scaled and no big puffy man cave stuff if you can.

I love it! Thank you so much. I never thought of putting the TV over there! I prefer that to putting it over the TV.

what do you recommend for next to each side of the fireplace?

Depends on the direction you take with the FP. If rustic stone, you could do a couple of drawer chest with art above. If you do something more refined, and need extra seating, you could to a pair of matching benches with art. Are you going rustic, contemporary, traditional, etc.? I like this one but you have a door right there on the right.

we’re planning on doing a rustic stone. Looking at a product called Airstone. Going more transitional than traditional. I love the idea of chest drawers With art above. Or mirrors as in your picture. Thank you!
