I don't think I'd do it, if you're renovating the whole kitchen soon. Going to be hard to match counter, paint, and the strange gray outlet covers. You don't need tile above the ledge of counter material, so if the tile is damaged, just take it out, repair the drywall, and save your pennies for next year.

Is your microwave at least 30" from the stove top? it seems rather low.

This is a correct distance. measure yours.

your granite piece up the back is your backsplash.

if you want to protect the wall behind the stove, get a solid piece of stainless steel and have him attach that for you. it will look much better.

Ikea has wall panels in the SS

Wallmart has the SS panel too (Kobe SSSp30)

or just do a SS tile. these actually come in a peel and stick option.

if you still want tile, then pick a color from the granite like a charcoal, black or cream,

this is almost like your granite w/the 4" piece. do a 2x8 or 3x12 glass subway like shown here.

or pick a mosaic in stainless steel

If it's temporary, why not at least consider peel and stick backsplash that goes right over your tile?

Thank you so much for your suggestions. This was my first time using these forums and it’s awesome to have this resource as we start our projects. I can see that doing tile doesn’t really make sense as a short term thing. Definitely going to look into the stainless steel panels now, as I hadn’t heard of those.
