Large, 8-12 feet tall and wide or even bigger. It'll be about 20 ft from the tree trunks, but still within the canopy. There are many surface roots, but I'm sure I can find a spot. Of course, vibrant fall color would be nice, as well as spring blooms. I like Summer Snowflake for it's extended bloom time, but I'm not sure it'll get wide enough for my needs. I'm really just trying to find a massive flowering shrub that can tolerate mostly shade and still flower a bit for me. It doesn't have to be a viburnum. Thank you!

Most Viburnum plicatum cultivars are broad growing, you've mentioned one of the very few selections that are not. So if you like that species choose one of the other named forms - keeping in mind that it likes a fertile soil and the autumn color is likely to be affected by the shadiness of the situation. Same as with just about any other deciduous shrub.

How about Bottlebrush Buckeye? Bright yellow fall color and grows well in the shade. AESCULUS PARVIFLORA VAR. SEROTINA

but what shade does.. is reduce vigor ... not only in regard to height.. but also fullness ...

it might take a decade for you to achieve your height goals ...

as always.. a pic of the spot will get you the best ideas ...

There are so many viburnum to choose from it is difficult to know where to start. At the nursery, all the tags state full sun to part shade. My situation is really mostly shade with a little bit of sun, so I was hoping some would be more shade tolerant than others.

I learned about Bottlebrush Buckeye from this forum, but I haven't been able to find it at any of the nurseries in my area. From what I have read, it really would be perfect for my needs.

I'm not really keen on waiting a decade for a decent sized shrub! Maybe I can prune some tree branches so more sunlight reaches the area.
