IMO there is no reason for the one you show other than mcmansion BS . I lived in an old large home and we had a servants staircae( no servants) that went into the kitchen at the back of the house seemed to make sense but that picture you posted makes no sense but that particular house is over the top anyway so not my cup of tea .

IMO it is for making an impression only, ostentatious. Not at all conducive to an actual warm and welcoming home.

that first staircase is nonsense, considering it doesn't even seen to serve a real purpose (splitting off from one point). but if you're talking about aesthetics only, nothing to do with practicality: still no to that first one. it's over-the-top and decadent in a ridiculous way.

the 2nd one makes more sense since it's coming from two sides of an enormous house. and I do like how it offers a view through the whole house from the front door.

Well, I would argue that, for 71 Bridle Path, if you're running laps in your house, the double staircase makes it easier to do stairs on your run without having to turn around...so I guess if that's your goal, it makes sense.

Looking at the original picture, the double staircase looks awkward to me. Ostentatious for sure, but also weird. I think the space would look a lot better with just the stairs curving up on the right side of the photo along the wall.

Looking at the photos that @worthy posted, the double staircase visually repeats the curved shape above. Additionally the stairs end far enough apart that you can imagine the functionality of large social events where many guests are streaming up and down either side of the staircase. Whereas the original post the stairs look like they create a pinch point both top and bottom losing any possible functionality of the double staircase.

Basically the original photo is a poorly designed and executed double-staircase serving only as an ostentatious visual display. It loses the elegance and purpose of well executed double staircases.
