btw.. thes are the holy troika of hosta ... if thats a phrase.. lol ...

the white centered one.. the white edged one ... and the green one ...

and probably the most traded ... gifted .... or left at the curb hosta in the universe.. mostly because they are indestructible.. and they grow like weeds ...

Thanks for all the info, Ken. I'm not surprised to learn it's indestructible, as the division even looked decent after it sat for a while before getting planted. I'll be sure to add it to my watering routine.

I'm not ken, but the difference is I see is texture and leaf shape. Undulata is a limp leafed hosta, for lack of a better description. The leaves just kind of hang there. NBC has a stiffer texture in the way it holds it's leaves. Also, NBC has a more defined/uniform white center. Most NBCs are spade/arrow shaped, while the undulata is more strap shaped.

The friend that gives me the most divisions is somewhat a collector, but she is also a bargain hunter, and will pick up dying twigs to baby back to life. So she has a mix of regular standards and more unique ones.

This hosta, however, plus the one in my #6 query, were not from her, but other people, and I think they may have come with their properties, so more apt to be old standards.

And Night Before Christmas doesn't have so much twist to the leaves has a more orderly mound look to it. That is one reason to not only look at individual leaves for IDs, but also over all size and shape.

I would say undulata Univittata. Looking at the Hosta Library pictures, I really can't tell the difference between them. But in my garden, the undulatas stay smaller, more compact and definitely whiter. The UUs have bigger leaves, bigger clumps and tend to sprawl. Just my two cents' worth.

NBC has leaves 12"x7"

UU has leaves 7"x4"

BIG difference. But you heed to be comparing mature plants, not younger ones.

Just following up here. Ken mentioned that my hosta was a "a really dry undulata". Does anyone have pics of not so dry ones that they can post , so I can see the potential mine has.

Right now it looks like undulata univittata to me. I didn't have a huge mound of it, and got rid of it last year. It wanted more light than I was willing to give it. But here is a picture of how it looked:

You will need more time to see if it develops into another possibility.

Oh, newhostalady, I love that pic of it with the fern. Hope it found its way to a new home with someone else.
