Granite for Countertop. Advice, please

We are retired and on a conservative budget for updating the kitchen not doing everything at once. The cabinets are 20 years old and in great shape. So for now they will stay as they are. If they were redone in the future, it would be a stain not paint. We are updating the granite counters, backsplash, sink, faucet and new dishwasher, range and microwave. The kitchen raised bar will be leveled to counter height. The walls are Accessible Beige. I am looking at granite in White Ice, Galaxy White and Nevasca. A large 4x12 subway for backsplash but would appreciate backsplash color advice. Floors will stay.

White Galaxy
White Ice
Nevaska

Sorry but I don't like any of those selections with your cabinets, floor & appliances. I would recommend plain white Corian Counter tops.

Appliances will be stainless. Thanks for your input.

I don't think any of them are great with your flooring, but I think Nevaska or White Ice might work. Do you have a sample of the floor to bring with you?

Unfortunately no but the granite suppliers have given samples that are larger than normal for me to bring home. The tile does have a lot of gray and beige in it.

We had thought about a black granite with a little white veining in it and white subway backsplash but concerned the black countertop would make the kitchen dark. There is little direct light in the kitchen but it is open to a family room with a wall of windows so it does get some light.

    I agree with Beverly.

I don't care for the colors in the granite you have available so far. I like the crispness of Glacier White Corian as well. You can choose a more interesting backsplash fi you crave more color or pattern.

Your cabinets are a fine color. The granites you show all have some of the preachiness of the cabinets, which to me is monotonous. A nice contrast makes more sense to me, plus, should you decide to stain the cabinets in the future, the granites you show would be limiting.

Would a white quartz with a gray vein be better?

Can you suggest a couple granites. I think this is called white persa but creamy white.

Rdcurrey, how can a gray vein look good with your cabinets and flooring? Choose finishes that work with what you have unless you plan on making changes. You told us the cabinet color and flooring stay.those two choices now drive all the other decisions. If you embrace those decisions, you can make the most of them.

If you really want granite, how about a honed, Absolute Black?

Your current selections for the granite make both the cabinets and floor look more pink. As they are both staying you really need to lean into more taupe tones if you want everything to work together.

Definitely no to the marble quartz. Nevaska might work, as well as the last one you showed.
Do the white appliances work? I don’t find them offensive; I’d keep them.

Refrigerator is staying for another year but dishwasher and range are 20 years old and many options on them are not working. Cabinets may be refaced in a couple years but don’t want to count on it.

with the bit of plum / grays and so forth of your first Choice (white galaxy ) the cabs pop a bit ....try orb hardware and either white / taupe / or mauve shading in backsplash. The second choice I just find ugly...the third has just a bit too much movement ... trying too hard / it will upstage everything. The first has appeal and works With cabs. The floor with some mats or runners in dark tones would not preoccupy me...., you can swap a tile floor / paint tile , but in reality a tile floor recedes esp w mats and runners.

Thank you. Based on other comments I was looking at Nero Mist, Blue Sapphire, or Black Galaxy as an option but we do like White Galaxy and a runner in front of my sink (maybe navy) is a good idea to break up the tile. There is a lot of tile. It extends into our family area with the TV.

It looks like your existing countertops are solid surface. Here's a thought . . .

keep the existing countertops and have them refinished if needed. @Joseph Corlett, LLC on here is the solid surface expert. He's shared amazing pictures of repairs, refinishes and sink replacements and upgrades.

Then update the backsplash in a tile that coordinates with the existing countertops . . .

These may not be the best choices for a tile, others on here can give better recommendations, but they convey the idea.

    Something to consider.

Thank you but I really want to change the color of the counter. Good thought though!

Patricia Colwell. There is gray in tile and cabinets. Why should I avoid it? I am curious because I thought it might be complementary to tile and cabinets.

In my last house, I had similar toned wood cabinets and used blue sapphire granite with them. It looked very nice. I also had a much lighter floor -pretty much white. It's so hard to view colors on our monitors so maybe you can be the better judge of the granites you are looking at. I don't have more photos - these are screenshots from the listing photos. The floor was a white tile but I had to crop it because it had address in it. Just to give an idea. I know though that it seems you want a lighter and brighter kitchen...

I would consider this beige & white backsplash tile from HD combined with the Corian Countertops. I have tried to illustrate it in your kitchen. It will be nice and bright. Please keep in mind that the SS fridge will have a black side unless you undertake a project to cover that.

Granite is not the right solution for every kitchen.

Beverly this looks great and I appreciate your help. We will revisit Corian and the backsplash. Love the backsplash!

Salon va. Yes that looks like my cabinets and the blue sapphire might look good too. So appreciate all the ideas from everyone.

I don’t know if this makes any difference but here is a photo of the area the kitchen opens to. Yes, I need a bigger area rug.

    Another shot

very pretty house. I think Beverly's idea with the backsplash is really lovely. and simple.

I am not sure how the floor will read with that but you will be in a better position to see it.

White Ice might work. Most if the slabs run creamy even though they have gray in them. You would need to hand pick your slab to make sure it runs creamy, not gray.

    We will definitely hand pick!

Beverly would solid white quartz work also? I ask only because Corian is not as easy to find in our area and also find someone in our area who works with it. We are in East Texas. Quartz and granite are pretty abundant here.

We are on The tail end of our kitchen remodel. When I saw your walls were accessible beige I wanted to show you how our new antico Bianco granite looks with our accessible beige.

Sure white quartz or even porcelain. Whatever you feel hits your budget

@rdcurrey Home Depot sells Corian. DuPont the makers of Corian have a dealer finder on their site as well: https://www.corian.com/-find-a-dealer-

Linda your antico Bianco looks lovely with your white cabinets and walls. Good luck with backsplash.

Thinking I will do a white countertop in quartz now. I am liking this for the backsplash in the 2x10 subway. Material is porcelain.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting, I see your comment above about always choosing granite over quartz or corian. This is my inclination but I don’t have a reason aside from preferring natural materials! Do you have a better reason? I am reading as much as possible about surfaces and gathering information before I make a choice. Thank you!

Definitely Nevaska! The other two lean towards the grey color palette, while the Nevaska includes a shade from your cabinet color. This will tie the design together.

    Happy remodeling!

All except for a light switch cover we are done. Thanks for the suggestions. They were all a great help!

Someday a new refrigerator but for now the white one is working great and only four years old. It was here when we bought the house.

    Looks great!

Very nice result. You may want to consider changing the color of your floor grout. It's a tedious job but can be done in stages. Many products, they work very well, one is Grout Renew @ HD.

    Looks wonderful, enjoy!
