      The first layer is 5/4x4 ripped in half, then spaced 7-1/2" out to out. Second layer is 5/4x6, centered on the first layer. This creates the 1" stepped effect.

      What did you use to fill in joints? Caulk or a wood filler?

      Both. Caulking on all inside corners, wood putty at butt joints & nail holes.

      This is my progress so far. I’m thinking about using only caulk for joints, seams on wall and nail holes. You think that’s a bad idea? Or should I get wood filler? I’m using mdf

      I don't think caulk works well at butt joints, but it can be used for nail holes.
