The chicken wire is to keep the blasted rabbits out. Also since the roses are tea roses I will probably need to keep it on to help with winter protection

Brandon - which roses are they, and approx where are you gardening?

I am asking because we have been having very hot (100 +), and humid (for here) weather, with thunderstorms, lightening, thunder, winds, and rain the last two mornings. This is almost unheard of where I live in Northern Calif. in August - the heat is not unusual, but we are normally dry, dry, dry, all summer. I must say, the garden likes it, but I do not.

The roses look nice. I have to use chicken wire around my young fig trees just as you've done here. Most of my roses are in my front yard, which is more open. Hopefully they won't go after those as well! Good luck.

Jackie, they are Safrano and Monsieur Tillier. They are 2 out of the 6 that I was able to shove into a moving van to move from Oregon to St. Louis back in March. I guess I will have to see if they make it through the winter.

And the reason for the 6 is because those were the only ones alive in pots after a year at my mom's, out of almost 100 potted roses.

Oh Brandon. So sorry your 94 potted roses are gone. Good luck in your new location. If you don't love it, you'll have to come back to Oregon.

Brandon, if you can I would love more close up photos of your Safrano. I have a no ID plant from Rosepetals I am wondering may be Safrano. Also, does your plant have smooth canes, or is it more prickley?

Sheila - The pics of Safrano on HMF look like it to me - it is variable in the color of its blooms both in the amount of time they are open, and because of the weather - one reason I love old tea roses! Pic of my Safrano below. Brandon - I think you are in zone 6b now, and HMF says Safrano is hardy to zone 7b, so you will need to give it a lot of winter protection. I hope that is a South facing wall.

My plant's blooms look like the photos on HMF but new growth is not red. It also has prickles. I hope I can figure it out in time.

My Safrano has prickles too, so I would not worry about that - I think the comment "thorn free" is way over used on some databases for roses which really do have thorns - they should say "less than average thorns", except for TRULY thornless roses like Yellow Lady Banks. The new growth on my S is, however, definitely red.

My baby no ID has reddish prickles and a hint of red but not really red. It is in a pot and maybe that could change. The blooms look right for Safrano.

The roses are on a south facing wall. I will give both roses winter protection, but I am not holding my breath.

I still talk to my mom, on occasion, but it was that way before the loss of roses too. So that doesn't change anything.

My Safrano has prickles. I will try to get a close up later tonight or early tomorrow when my camera doesn't cause flowers in that range to glow.

I would love to move back to Oregon, since I grew up there, but I have been trying to get back to working for my church since 2009, and this job I have now is my dream job. The opportunities open so infrequently that when it came I had to take it, leaving Oregon behind.

You are a brave soul, Brandon. I really appreciate having to move for a dream job. I'm glad your Safrano has prickles too. It seems to have the general shape of yours too. I gifted delphinium plants I started from seed from England to a treasured friend and she let them die for lack of water. She was not a plant person, I found out the hard way. Your Mom sounds like my Mom.

Brandon, they were from the International Delphinium Society and the world's best. Then I grew them under grow lights and was giving her a treasure. Sadly, some people are not plant people.

Brandon, thank you. Safrano is a definite possibility for mine. My leaves look different, but I often see variability in those too. As the plant matures, I'm sure I can sort it out. Good luck with yours in your new location.

I appreciate that Brandon. It is hard to get these mislabeled ones. I'm really starting to think that is the best guess even though mine is prickly and not that red as far as new foliage goes.

Comtesse, my no ID rose (young in a pot) has looked a myriad of different ways already in it's first year.

Thank you Comtesse. I love having classic roses, so if mine is Safrano that will be great. Since I am going for a wild naturalistic garden, it will probably fit in better than Molly Sharmon-Crawford would have.

Yes, Jackie, the blooms look like yours. The foliage on mine does not have the red yours shows. It could be pot living. I have hope.
