Laundry/Mudroom - stacked or side-by-side washer/dryer?

We're about to start demo on a kitchen, powder rm, laundry/mudroom reno. The only thing we can't come to consensus on is whether to leave the front loading washer/dryer side-by-side or stack them. Either way, we'll also have clothes cubbies/lockers and seating space. If I stack them, I can fit in a laundry/utility sink. If I keep both on the floor, I can have folding space on top.

Help me with your experience - which is the better way to go, both for function and for resale (although that's not my top priority)?

Agreed, a laundry sink would be useful for many occasions.

I dealt with the same choice. I opted for the laundry sink, and I use it constantly. To add folding space, I used leftover material from the sink cut-out and placed over the sink. I also considered a small, folding wall-mounted table which can drop down when not needed , but can be lifted whenever you need extra folding/stacking room. Best of both worlds! Good luck and please post pictures when you finish!

Thanks schmoopie2 and Dytecture - That's what I'm leaning toward...now to see how the math (geometry?) works! I'll add layout options tomorrow so you can get a better sense of what I'm talking about (home computer doesn't have the software I have at work).

Hi Kelly, I ended up stacking them. With that, I got a corner sink and sorting/folding space. Very happy we did this. The sink helps for hand laundry, washing things I don't want in kitchen sink (garden, craft and/or paint tools) and as a butler's pantry sink when we have big parties (prep, not during party).

Having said that, bear in mind that appliance sizes change and we were somewhat limited when we had to replace the old w/d. Maybe plan for 3" wider and taller than current appliances?

One thing I'm glad I did (maybe stole from this site?) was put in an outlet on the opposite wall at above counter height. Great for the rare occasions I iron things!

If there is a mechanical issue with washer or dryer, do you have to pull both machines out to do maintenance??
