Between reading valuable material and actually experimenting yourself you should be able be successful. Reading only is not enough. A lot of growers don’t have enough time to spend a lot of hours doing yard work and somewhat compromise. It just take time to get good, for me anyway.

That was a good article. I read a link from there on ripening of tomatoes and when they should be picked.

I pick tomatoes when they just start to turn color (pink blush) so bugs, birds and sudden rain don't ruin them. They color up and stay fine that way indoors. late in the season when they go from a pale green to a very dark green I find they will ripen off the vine nicely too. Th etype of tomato you grow has the most to do with taste.

These kinds of experiments are generally hard to do. Very easy to fall in the so called "Correlation vs Causation" trap. And then there are all these hidden variables too.

Several years back I visited the monastery in Brno, Czech Republic where the famous Gregor Mendel conducted his experiments on genetics of peas and other plants. His work is the origin of modern genetics. This guys spent decades doing the experiments, taking meticulous notes, making graphs and charts. They are all on display in the monastery. Very impressive. He also did experiments on growing citrus. Built a small greenhouse for that and took various daily measurements for many years.
