I Spy quilts are my favorite quilts to make. I never thought to use a 9 patch for them, though. Great Quilt!

bkay, I saw a picture online of a similar quilt pattern for the snake and found the blog it was associated with. I couldn't find the pattern he was talking about in the blog, so ... I printed the and then made the pattern for the head. It is all HST and squares, except the head. I machine appliqued the eyes onto the head, then stitched the head down over the finished top before quilting. All in all, it was pretty easy. The heads on my snakes are a little different shape.

I found the answer. It's a Fons and Porter pattern from the 90's. I doubt I'll make it, but it's really cute.

Sue, I like how you used a 9-patch for the scrappy I Spy. This would be a good one to use for leaders and enders. Just keep a pile of solids and a pile of novelty right there by the machine. I need to get that set up for a baby quilt that needs to be made. It isn't due til Feb but the last baby hasn't gotten their's yet.......hmmmmm maybe I'll just ditch what I had in mind for her and make her this one. lol

Sue, I was just looking at your two quilts again. Did you use piping in the borders or is that a thin strip of fabric? I really like the way that looks!

Char - it is the faux piping method. There are several tutorials online, but it is really easy. I cut one strip of binding 1-3/4" (the accent color) and one 1-1/2". Sew them together and press so the raw edges match. This lets you have about 1/8-1/4" of accent color. You stitch the binding to the back, bring to the front and machine quilt to finish. Joining the ends is the hardest part because I do it on the bias, but they show how to do that in the tutorials, also.
