Help with Dishwasher layout

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi! I am remodeling my kitchen and separating the sink from the dishwasher on two adjacent walls. Should I keep this layout below, or add a cabinet in between the dishwasher and lazy Susan? Will this be problematic setup from a plumping perspective? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I don't find that layout to be functional at all. Often, my dishes go from the sink to the dishwasher (after a bit of rinsing if needed)...where would you stand to do that? Also, with the dishwasher in the current location, you only have one real cabinet accessible for storing dishes that you unload.

Since you have a window on both walls, can you put the sink under the other window and the DW right next to the sink? I think you would be very unhappy about having to squeeze in and turn backwards to load the dishwasher.

Tough layout. Have you considered getting rid of the island? Then you could move fridge to the opposite wall. And sink, dishwasher, stove all on the sink-wall.

I think you need to swap the sink and dishwasher location (at the very least). Then you will have a clear counter near the stove for prep. But I agree the dishwasher would ideally be closer to the sink.

Put the range where you show the dishwasher, then dishwasher to left of sink. But really you should post a floorplan showing dimensions and adjacent rooms. Are window placements set?

Imckuin has the best solution--put the sink under the window on the short side of the L, with the DW to the right. That also gives you more prep space between the sink and range.

If you absolutely can't move plumbing, then make the cabinet to the right of the DW a drawer base, to store dishes. BTW, the end of the open DW door will be ap 25-27" from the box of the DW. The corner susan will be 12" from the box of the DW, and the center point of a 30" sink will be another 15" from the corner susan (total 27" from the corner), so you shouldn't have any trouble loading the DW.

I agree that is a no brainer .It also allows for some nice wide drawers for pot storage near the stove

Thanks, everyone! I will go back to my original design keeping the sink and dishwasher together on the short wall. I had considered an alternate design because I was having a difficult time finding a decent sink to fit inside a 30” cabinet. I truly appreciate your feedback!

I was having a difficult time finding a decent sink to fit inside a 30” cabinet.

If you are doing new construction of a kitchen, why must you have a 30" sink base cabinet? Go larger. A sink is about the most important thing in a kitchen.

Much better layout as you can afford it. I have the layout you proposed first (because of the kitchen size, I had no real other possibilities) and it is very awkward, not so much because the two are on two differents walls, but because DW and cabinet under the sink are in conflict.

You can find plenty of sinks that fit into a 30"cabinet, particularly if it is a single bowl sink.

My friend has a similar layout in his MIL apartment. Plumbing is not a problem. The drain and H/W line run behind the cabinets on the floor with a high loop for the drain behind the DW.

Look into a 30” Kohler Whitehaven for a 30” sink base. It’s the biggest sink I found that can fit in a 30” base and it’s quite roomy.
    Definitely sink under window.
