kitchen changes

Hey I'm doing to redo my kitchen. We moved in pretty recently so we haven't done anything yet. The cabinets are in good shape but, I'm thinking of painting them, to update and brighten the room. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do yet. I was thinking white for all except the island, maybe blue for the island? Any ideas??🤔

Noooo! Do not paint those gorgeous cabinets!! I think the cabinets, countertop, and floor are beautiful together and wouldn't touch any of that - no way! I would change out the backsplash and paint the walls -- something not in the yellow family, maybe a soft sage-y green?

Change backsplash, update pendants and change wall color, I would not touch the cabinets, they look good as is.

I agree. Change back splash, declutter, paint the walls (soft green or blue). New pendants. maybe a rug/runner to break up the wood

I know sometimes photos can be deceiving. Your cabinets do look new. I can see where you might be tempted to change the color of the cabinets. The floor is such a similar tone, the contrast is low. But I would tend to agree with the consensus. They are really nice cabinets. And painting them won't give you the factory finish you started with. If you are a fan of white kitchens, which so many people are these days, I could see why these cabinets might not be your cup of tea.

But if you painted all the cabinets white, what would you do with the wall color? Would you leave them cream? Paint them white? Then you might find all the white a little overwhelming. So, if you were going to paint the walls anyway, then why not try a different color that would complement the rest of the kitchen first and see if you are happier with the cabinets.

My thought is that the way the cabinets are laid out, with that wall of cabinets and the fridge, that no matter what color they are, they are a prominent aspect of the kitchen, so even if you paint them white, you might not get the affect you are looking for.

Are you planning a complete redo at some point? Personally, I think it looks like a great kitchen. Full of storage, lots of light, that great tall ceiling with the wood. Hardwood floors. Maybe change the backsplash and maybe paint just the island a pretty shade of blue if you really find all the wood too much and paint the walls. And that is a compromise that you mind find the best solution. And what do you have to lose? If after painting the walls and the island cabinets, you still don't want the wood cabinets, you could go ahead and paint them white af some point and then change the backsplash after you've decided.

thank you all for your input. I do like the color of the cabinets. Pictures can be deceiving, so perhaps I should mention my specific concerns.

    1. this kitchen is a lot smaller than it appears. It's not bad on a sunny day, but it feels dark at night making it seem even smaller.
    2. I like the wood and beams on the ceiling, but when combined with the cabinets and the floor-it's wood on wood on wood on wood. No contrast.
    3. the walls are wallpapered, a wheat color with texture. It's not bad, but the matching tiles with the Tuscan blue touches are not really my style. I was thinking of a lighter, more modern backsplash.
    4. the granite counter is nice but tends to make the room even darker. I was thinking of a lighter countertop, maybe white with beige or gold.

here are some examples of lighter kitchens...

So change out the counter, backsplash to be more like the pics above. Consider new pendant lights as well. Please don't paint the cabinets!

You seem to want a white kitchen. You have three different wood tones ( floor, ceiling, cabinets). Paint the cabinets! I would replace the counters and backsplash too...

I love your inspiration photos! What if you did the walls a soft white, fix the lighting issue with bigger brighter lights, lighter more modern backsplash. Then consider lightening that heavy ceiling with a white wash? Then see how it feels? It may end up feeling more like your pics

I would feel the same way, with the wood on wood on wood. But I really like the idea that KTF had to white wash the ceiling. Especially if you feel the room is dark at night. If you choose a very thin layer of a natural process/paint to just allow the wood texture to come thru. OH, also - I just looked through some of my idea books and there are a few with wood ceilings. They aren't as dark as yours, but they do have recessed lighting added to them, which I thought made a big difference.

I like your inspiration photos too. I think what makes the wood in the cabinets and the floor work, is the white ceiling and light counter. I also really like the idea of new lighter counter and more modern backsplash.

Here is a kitchen with a good balance of neutral colors and wood. The cabinets are great but the wood ceiling has been given a driftwood stain? And they have a nice tile floor. Notice the lighting in the ceiling.

I know this is a huge gorgeous kitchen and the cabinets are all painted and the island is a different color. This is one of my favorite kitchens, that will always be out of my price range [g], but, I thought it was a very good example of how to make a dark ceiling work. Not only do they have recessed lighting in the ceiling itself but they have upward lighting above the cabinets that highlight the ceiling.
