De-neoclassicalizing (!) my library

last modified: 6 years ago

Previous owners went neo-classical nuts and (among many other projects) had library shelves gold-leafed by a faux painter. While most of the exterior is heavy millwork, you can actually see the sheets of (faux?) gold leaf on the straight sides. SO ... I want to de-neo this room and paint the shelves, trim, etc. I'm thinking of painting the shelves -- interior and exterior -- a semi-gloss black; walls, ceilings and other trim and shutters will be BM Linen.

Assuming the painter can't make the straight sides of the cases perfectly smooth, will imperfections left from the sheets of gold leaf be glaring? Should I stick with white? My hesitation is the idea of books sliding in and out, leaving scuffs on white paint. And I really like black. And yes, I'd say my style is eclectic leaning toward clean traditional. Thoughts? (Photo added 9/13 -- this is one of three sides of room finished in book cases wall to wall.)
