Please help with vanity mirror

i had an oval mirror installed over our new vanity and it doesn’t look right. The owner where it was purchased said I need something more substantial on top to balance out the vanity. The vanity is 54 inches wide and I can buy a matching mirror that is 22” x 36”. If I hang this horizontally, there will be only 9” on either side of the mirror, which seems too tight for the sconces. If I hang it vertically, I’m wondering if it will be too tall. The ceiling height is about 7 1/2 feet.

This is new construction and although it is a full bath, it will mostly be used as a powder room for the room with the tv over the garage. I would like to decide soon because I don’t want to select the sconces until we decide on the mirror, so I am holding up the electrician.

Any advice would be most appreciated. A picture of the vanity is shown below. (Please excuse the mess on the right- we don’t yet have our co so this is the only bathroom we use).

It’s too small. A bigger mirror, but round could work there.

    As big as 22”x36”

There was supposed to be a question mark above.

    A 30” x 40” hung vertically would work well.

I’m not sure if that size is available, but I can check for something in that range. Would the 22”x 36” be too small?

Actually, maybe 22 x 36 (hung vertically, of course) would be better than 30 x 40. Do you have any paintings that you could hang there just to get a feel for size? You could also try out different sizes using poster board or even just painter’s tape.

I think it would help if your mirror were framed too, to give it more substance.

What do your sconces look like?

Does this also look too small? I actually love the way this bathroom turned out although I think the sconces may be a little too high and possibly a bit too far apart; makes me wonder if I prefer smaller mirrors than other people do.

Yeah, that’s a pretty dinky mirror. 😬 And the sconces do appear to be a bit on the high side.

I would put a very tall rectangle mirror, almost to the ceiling. We had our glass guys cut a large beveled mirror ($67) and then picked out a frame at Hobby Lobby, which they framed. It was a custom mirror for a fraction of the cost at a mirror/dept. store.

Go for a round mirror and as big as possible. Because of it's shape it will fill the space but won't be overpowering. You can go with a thick wood frame for a traditional look or go with a thin metal frame for a more contemporary look.

Sammy, below is a cutout of the 22”x36” mirror (I had already done this and was struggling to determine if the size worked before ordering the mirror). I’m not sure it does, but at least there would be 16” on each side which would be plenty of room for sconces. (Turning it horizontal would leave only 9” on each side.). The mirror you thought was ”dinky” is 22”x28”, but of course an oval has less area than a square with equal outer dimensions.

Acm, I agree that the mirror needs to be framed, but if so, I think I’d like it to match the cabinet, which is cherry, or at least complement it. And I have a hard time with online purchases- I once ordered a mirror that was described as black and pewter and I had envisioned a gorgeous black frame with metal highlights; instead, it was plastic with silver paint. I threw out the frame and brought the mirror to a custom frame shop to get what I wanted. I could probably do something similar here but the company that makes the vanity also makes matching mirrors.

Agevm, the picture above is a relatively tall “mirror” (cardboard) and I’m not sure the proportions are right.

Typeandrun and Brown Dog, thank you for the suggestion, but I prefer oval and rectangular mirrors to round ones although I’m not sure why.

Great idea with the cardboard! You could go closer to the backsplash so it doesn't look like it's floating. My mirror is 30 by 43 tall. Total vanity size 48" and ours is cherry as well. I like a large mirror in a smaller room like the bathroom. It left me 9 inches on each side for my sconces. My sconces run parallel to the mirror maybe 20 inches and give amazing light. I looked up my total mirror cost and it was under 300 each. I have a two inch frame and added a fillet around the center which cost extra. We needed two and they were slightly different sizes so had them done as described above. We are in Scottsdale, AZ.

You could go a little wider, too. You are barely covering your sink size with the cardboard.

Try a couple of circular hand towel rings under the sconces
