Coordinating Lighting

Our family room still isn't quite finished, but it is close enough to post. We need additional lighting, but I am worried about coordinating styles. I like a mix of modern and old, but I still want them to complement each other. I need a floor lamp for the corner where you see the chair and sconces for either side of the picture above the couch (THAT pic is just a placeholder btw...I am having my daugher's portrait painted from the last photo you see here and it will hang there). I want to spend $200 ballpark for each (sconces and lamp). Can you guys help me with good possibilities please? Thank you!

Room looks dark for me. In addition to lamp and sconces I would get a light rug.

Thanks. Do you have any suggestins for lamps or sconces?

    Your daughter is beautiful.

The grey fad is essentially over and there is an overload of grey in your space. The wood pieces that you have and the small plant I see are not making a dent - in terms of being able to bring any balance to it. Lighting alone is not going to be enough. A light colored rug as was suggested might help somewhat.

Guys - look. I am not asking for a breakdown and assessment of my room. I didn't include the whole room for that reason. I really just want help with the lights.

Thank you! I really like the look of brass against the wall color (it is actually Urbane Bronze from SW and has a but of a brownish gold tone but is difficult to photograph) but I was concerned that bright brass would look odd with the old fixture overhead.

What is the color of the frame across from the sofa? That "color" might be a good one to try for the sconces. There doesn't seem to be a lot of space between the book case and chair. Maybe a simple unlacquered brass or a burnished brass pharmacy lamp would work. Or what about a lamp on the short table between the 2 chairs? I know the window is there but it may be a good spot so the corner doesn't get crowded.

You can mix metals/metal finishes. First sconce I posted has aged brass in it; I think it’s available with a number of different shade options.

This one that I posted above looks like it might have an aged brass/bronze look, could fit into the category.

@gcubed it's a really odd color to describe - it looks gold in pics but in person it is like a wood tone that has been distressed with a whitish overtone? It reads a bit like aged bronze or brass. The space issue is what I worry about too. I love the tripod style lamps but I'm just not sure I have enough room. The corner is dead otherwise but I still need to be able to access the bookcase. Which of these do you guys like best? I am also kind of in love with these sconces but I think I would age the metal a bit if I go that route.

@freedomplace I love the globes too!

And yes I think a lamp between those chairs might be a better option. Great point!

Love those sconces. Perfect. Aging the brass a bit more would also work. Great choice.

What size with the portrait be? You want to make sure it doesn't dwarf the sconces or other way around. I think the bronze floor lamp will just blend into the wall/bookcase. I would get a lamp for in-between the chairs and forgo the floor lamp and let that corner breathe.

I like this plan. The picture is going to be large - roughly 28 by 40 with the frame.

Do you think 13" long sconces are big enough?

It is a small room - 13x13 total, with 10' ceilings. We rarely have overnight guests, but when we do this couch folds out into a bed. Otherwise, the room is a family room for my husband, daughter and I to play chess, listen to music, and watch movies together.

This rug is not wool or silk, which you may prefer. But I like this one and how it works in the space. Nice texture.

That is very pretty. I actually have a white rug in the living room that I want to move here, but I need to get it cleaned first and find a replacement for there. I am actually loving the natural lighting in here in the morning, but at night it is SO dark. And as much as I want to do it all at once, the chairs were $1000, the couch was a $1000, the entertainment center, the TV...you get what I am saying. To be perfect it needs a rug...to be functional it needs light.

I also LOVE pops of this fuschia (look at the coaster under my coffee) in this room, and the curtains are a muted purple silk. What do you think about bringing the brighter fuschia tones into the rug (not totally that color, but incorporated into the design)?

    Maybe something like this?

Everywhere I have used shades of this here I love it.

I love the muted purple on curtains and the fuchsia under coffee cup. Stunning. Plus, great how you have the accents in books, etc.

I am starting to get a better sense of your scheme. On my monitor your room reads very grey. I am familiar with Urbane Bronze - and even knowing it’s the color you used, I can only get a fleeting glimpse of it here and there. Either the pics or my monitor - or both - are very off. And this happens at times.

Here is a purple with fuchsia.

I brought the rug in on other side of room, so you could see it with curtains and fuchsia under cup/fuchsia coaster.

I think that rug is nice. You can always order a small 2x3 size to see it in real life (and makes it easier to return if it's not a good fit).

I think I'd wait on the sconces until the portrait is hanging. Then you can use painter's tape to approximate the best size for sconce AND location (you will get them hardwired?). less room for error. Look for lamp for near chairs first. The chairs look low and the table tall in comparison so the right lamp may be tricky.

Great suggestions on the rug and ordering a small one when we are ready.

Absolutely re:hardwiring the sconces. I hate seeing cords. That makes sense and I knew I probably needed to wait...just impatient to get some things done lol.

The table is an easy fix, as it is cobbled together at the moment. It is actually two antique beer boxes so they are very easy to move, replace etc. A lot of the smaller items here aren't in their permanent homes - but I haven't found the perfect things yet and am using what I have until I do.

Not the right lamp, but as a starting point...taller or shorter in regards to the chairs? Def don't want it right in our eyes, and would be great if it were reading height.

Will your daughter’s portrait be framed? I would try and figure out the final dimensions of the portrait and tape it out on the wall. Then, space out where your sconces will be located...and try out different sized sconces (again, using tape) to see what size you like. I like the idea of a burnished brass finish for sconces. Their glow will enhance the moodiness of your room. Can’t see what you choose!

    Great suggestions from @Gcubed! 👌

You would definitely want to order the smallest sized rug and or a sample. I think that particular rug - as can happen - is not showing in your room exactly true to color(s). I think the actual color on the purple is darker/deeper. On the site, there is a room pic that shows the coloration better, I think. But better to check it out for yourself in real time/real life. :) I like the rug.

I also really like the rug you posted above, and I’ve been trying to find something similar. This is as close as I’ve gotten, so far.

Your table might be a little high with the chairs. But it‘s OK and I think the height you have estimated seems OK. Also, depends on what kind of lamp you get.

General rules: Table should ideally be chair/sofa arm height. And the total height of the lamp should be approximately the height of the table minus an inch or 2(I think). The bottom of the lamp shade should be at eye level. And lamp shade width should not be >50% of the table's width: you don't want it too top heavy.

    Is this table better here?

Sit in the chairs and see what eye level is. Based on that figure out where the bottom of a shade would be. That table looks too tall - you’d have a very short lamp on it to keep the light bulb under the shade and not if your eyes. Unless y’all are tall! Then it may work. That lamp may be too tall but another may work
