Cotton Bed Sheet for Planter Liner?

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi, everybody.

I'm wondering if it's okay to use cotton fabric as a liner for my outdoor cedar herb planter. I want to try to avoid using anything made of plastic. The planter is 32" long, 8" wide, and 8" deep. There are 3/32" gaps in the bottom for drainage. I plan on cutting the fabric to cover the bottom and half way up the sides, and then glueing it down. I plan on growing garlic or scallions.

I was thinking of getting a Quest raised bed liner. It's cheap, but I assume it's made of some form of plastic. I've seen some websites recommend canvas, but I can't find any light weight canvas that's also affordable. I was thinking of cutting up an old cotton or bamboo bed sheet? Would the fabric biodegrade?

Thanks.
