Please help me pick a rug

6 years ago

I am looking for a rug. This is the one I found so far. Obviously it is the wrong size. The store lent it to me so I can try it in my home. What do you think? Is it too busy? This is a room that we use a lot so we prefer a rug not too light. This room is usually not as dark. We would like the focal point to be the painting. Attached is a picture of the fabric of my chairs.

Do you have other suggestions? Please if possible, give me the name so I can try to find it in my area.

Thank you.

    The rug you select should be at least as wide as your sofa. I like this rug because it incorporates the beige of your sofa and the gray of your chairs along with off white that brightens the room.

    This rug below is not as successful even though it has the right colors.

    Perhaps a nesting table would meet your coffee table requirements.

    Thank you BeverlyFLADeziner. Yes, the rug I posted is too small. It is a sample the store lent to us just to try the style in my house. I am not convinced that it will be this one as I questioned that it might be too busy. The chairs look gray but they are really green. I posted a picture of the fabric hoping that people would see the green. Thank you for your suggestion about the nested tables. It would be a good solution if we needed a table closer to the couch but the way we use the room, the tables would always be nested as we need the space to extend the recliners on the sofa and the chairs. As mentioned, we have side tables that we use all the time.

    A light color rug would be nice but we use this room all the time, we need something darker unfortunately. Do you have a suggestion for a centerpiece?

    I‘d compliment the blue in the art and chose a simple cream rug with a greyish blue trellis pattern.

    https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/jaipur-trellis-rug-in-denim/5312761?skuId=77503021&epik=dj0yJnU9T01uUU15Z0lzeTZXT2FDTkctaDkzQlRrNzdvQ2o2Ri0mcD0wJm49Qm1xSnNwTG1Tbmt6Y2M3MlFCemc2QSZ0PUFBQUFBRjlVQXA0

    Add some complementary cushions on your couch. Fabric looks subtle enough to work with the rug and the introduction of blue.

    You could add a tray on coffee table, per above and reconsider how you accessorize fireplace, so art pops

    You can have a lighter rug to brighten up the room without worrying about it. Most rugs are easy to spot clean.
    Some ideas to consider. Is 8x10 the right size? You want the legs of the furniture on it, at the minimum.

    https://trk.overstock.com/myN61A2Lx9, https://trk.overstock.com/dzh8e7TLx9,

    https://trk.overstock.com/HiMwKKaMx9 (comes in several colors)

    https://trk.overstock.com/rdbjI7oMx9 (this would brighten the room and bring in a happy red)

    Maureen, It's nice to have another set eyes. I have been living in this space for a long time so I am just getting used to the look/feeling of it. I like the inspiration picture you posted. My draperies are dated, I will change them eventually. I would like to change the lamps too.

    My living room is connected to the dining room. See picture below. Again, the lighting is not the best. It is a rainy day today and plus we have a seasonal canopy over the deck during the summer making the two rooms a lot darker.

    BTW, the rug I posted is slightly bigger than 5x7. Our old rug was 7x10 and that will be the size of the future rug.

    So now, I am looking for suggestions for:

    1) rug in the living room. I like some that have been suggested with a regular, yet classic pattern. I would like it to be a bit darker. We walk on it all the time. The chairs are green even though they look gray. (I don't want a rug in the dining room. I know it defines the space but I find it really annoying to pull the chairs in and out);

    2) lamps for the living room;

    3) accessories for the mantle. I might put a wider mat in the picture like Sam Gorson but I am not sure as the picture is square and it might be too high with my 8 ft ceiling that also has crown moldings;

    4) cushions (primary function to put our head on them. They tend to go on the floor otherwise);

    5) center piece for the coffee table;

    6) center piece for the dining room table;

    7) accessories for the hutch.

    I like the greens in your art. I think a tone on tone like this rug would work well. Some pattern but not too much.

  • 6 years ago

    Thank you Flo Mangan. Unfortunately this type of green will not work with the green of my chairs. I shopped for rugs with some green in it. I found not one where the green was working. My chairs are almost like an army green (with some goldish and dark brown pattern). The size of rug I need is 7x10.

    You can mix greens. That’s not a problem. Standard size would be 8 x 10. Also, I always recommend getting smallest size of rug to test color, style and quality. Much easier to return. If you like then you order proper size. Your furniture is pretty neutral so lots can work. I will see what else I can do to help you. Bbl

    Flo Mangan, The old one I have is 6.5x9.5 but the stores I went (in Canada) they say they are sold as '7x10" but their real dimensions are 6.5x9.5. I agree on the websites, I always see 8x10. Maybe because they come from USA?

    I am open to mix greens (I don't like matchy-matchy --even though the rug I posted is a bit too matchy-matchy for my taste). I see different greens in the frame but the color I see on my screen seems that the green on the rug and the green on the chairs will not work. What makes me think that is that both the chairs and the rugs are big pieces and solid colors. I am not expert in decoration, I must say.

    That’s OK. Just seeking to understand. Some US providers ship to Canada. At least we can give you ideas you can search for similar products there.

    freedomplace1, thank you for the website. The app is really neat. I like this rug a lot (Nourison Euphoria EPU05). It is on light side color but might be ok. I would have to see the real color. Any opinion anyone?

    As for the lamp, I don't think I want green but I would not know what other color. Maybe rusty?

    Flo Mangan, I appreciate all the help even if it is only ideas. At least it gives me some direction. :)

    Interesting. I never considered a loud color. I am not sure I am ready for this right at this moment. It would be a matter of time before I get use to the idea but I am glad you show something that I have never thought of. At this moment I am more attracted to neutral colors. In fact, I don't like the rug I posted anymore. The winner for me so far is the Nourison Euphoria EPU05. I just would like to get something close to that in a darker color. I really like the pattern.

    I made a photoshop of the rug you suggested using a larger view of my living room:

    As Maureen mentioned, my living room has too many styles. It will be a work in progress as we have more urgent spendings.

    I am hoping to get suggestions that I will implement with time. If you scroll up, you can see my dining room with a picture that I also like. It reminds me the trips I made where I just relax and feel the life is so easy. I would like to bring that feeling into my living room (if at all possible?). These are the things I want to change eventually (not in order):

    - rug (this will be the first buy). I like the one in the picture below. What do you think? Could it work with the style I want to create?

    - draperies

    - re-upholster chairs (they stay, too comfortable). I need fabric suggestions.

    - sofa. It has to be in leather with recliners.

    - cushions.

    - accessories (mantle, hutch, table centerpiece living room and dining room).

    - possibly the lamps. I like them but I am not sure if they go with the ambiance I want to create.

    - storage behind the chairs. I want a large unit to store non-decorative elements and expose travel souvenirs.

    - flowers on the storage behind the chairs has to go soon. I don't like them at all.

    - replace large plant with something smaller.

    - I want to expose my table top but I need protection as we do all kind of activities. I am thinking of a glass.

    - With no other reason than just because I like them, I want to keep all the tables in the living rooms and the pictures in living room and dining room and the chandelier.

    I will post photos of my living room and dining room during daytime tomorrow without the accessories to make it easier for anyone of you who wants to do photoshop.

  • 6 years ago

    Here are the pictures I took with no accessories in the living room and dining room. I put a white solid 'rug' to make it easier for those who would like to make a photoshop of rugs.

    I also includes a bunch of accessories that I no longer (or never) used. Any suggestions to include them in my decor are welcome.

    As I said, my living room needs to be primary functional but I am willing to make minor changes when I have guests (such as put furniture closer to the table, put decorative pillows):

    Put tall glass arrangements one on each side of art on buffet in dining room.

  • 6 years ago

    Here's the hutch with the tall glass arrangements. Personally, I find them too small beside the frame. I turned the large plant so it looks a bit smaller. I think it makes a difference so I will most likely cut some branches to make it thinner. BTW, I find the two tall arrangements work beside the living room picture when there is nothing else on the mantle.

    I want to order some small rugs from the freedomplace1 site she gave me: https://therugdistrict.ca/. Like I said, I would like to feel the same ambiance as in the dining room picture. Are there any rugs from this site that would work in my living room?

  • 6 years ago

    Just make sure that the long side of the rug is parallel to the sofa, as opposed to perpendicular.

    First, remove that plant. It throws everything off. Center buffet to light fixture. That should all line up. Picture might need adjustment too. Agree, I don’t like the arrangements there. Are they the same size? I think a pair of buffet lamps on the buffet either side of Art would be nice. Or put candle type sconces either side of art. Once you decide on buffet we can figure out centerpiece first table. I am wondering if a round tray with 3 different height jars or objects would be nice. I will post some ideas. Your existing pieces are either too big or wrong colors so we have to think a bit more about your accessories.

    Thank you Nancy Walton. I see your point. Unfortunately, we need a large space between the sofa and the chairs as all of them have recliners that we use. We chose an oval table to allow us to get the furniture as close as possible when the recliners are extended. That was the best we could do.

  • 6 years ago

    Actually, the buffet, table and light fixture are all centered (or at least that is the intention - might need to adjust again). The picture is not centered with the buffet because of the initial arrangements on the buffet I had. I will take a picture tomorrow with the picture centered and remove the plant. Yes, the glass arrangements are not the same height.

  • 6 years ago

    Love the art over the fireplace! Maybe pull out the coral, like Flo suggested. Here are some more muted options. Selection will depend on what direction you want to take the room, I think.

    Thank you Sofia. At first I did not know what I wanted but I am trying to get a 'relax Sunday' feeling in my living room. This idea comes from the other frame I have in my dining room which I also like. I don't know if it is at all possible. I am not exactly sure what kind of rug would be a good base to work towards my goal. I think one that has faded pattern like you shown might work. I am just not sure about the redish color in it on top of my orangish hardwood floor.

    I put a mock up together with the Marais lamps but I didn’t like them. So I found these with gold base and acrylic base. I think the chandelier would be more in sync with your art with shades. I am not happy with your glass arrangements for table. I put a more casual but clean line drapery. I added gold twig bowl to buffet and you could add seasonal balls or ornaments to it if desired.

    I centered the table with the chandelier and the picture and hutch with the table. I would like to keep the chair beside the hutch. I don't have any place in my house where to put it.

    I also included a floor plan of my living room for you to see my limited option as to how and where to place the rug.

    felizlady, I am looking at oriental-style rugs but so far I find them too busy. I would like my picture frame to be the focal point.

    I think there is a better layout for your living room. I will work on it tonite. Been trying a couple things and I am pretty sure it can work. Is the drawing you posted to scale? Is each square equal to one square foot? Bbl

  • 6 years ago
    last modified: 6 years ago

    Thank you Flo. It is important that we can watch the television in that room and that we have storage. The 2 chairs swivel.

    Yes, one square is one foot. I just realized that the rug should be moved to the south wall a bit. We have a 24 in. walkway in front of the tv stand.

    I added the adjacent rooms in this floor plan:

  • PRO
    6 years ago

    Here is first cut. I moved things around. Lol. I have made the fireplace wall your focal point. TV goes on TV Cabinet on a swivel stand so slight angles can be achieved. The storage cabinet goes to dining room and huntsboard in dining room moves to right of fireplace. Chairs at table get reoriented to positions as shown. This creates 3’ walkway behind sofa for easy transportation around space. Swivel chairs have more space to turn to conversation or TV. Fireplace and art become major focus on wall. Once final layout is defined then we can figure out rug size.

    and place Dining room arm chair in spot between dining and living room.

  • 6 years ago
    last modified: 6 years ago

    I appreciate the effort Flo but I don't think it will work. I really like my center table and it is 32 in. x 48 in. The sofa has recliners that we use and we would not have enough room to put the table and the sofa in front of the fireplace. Also we would not be able to see the fire in the fireplace when we are seating at the table. The hutch would fit really tight in the corner. Also I forgot to draw a bit of a wall that protrudes between the 3 windows and the patio doors which means the chair would be too much in the way.

    I think I can convince my husband to spend on the rug, the accessories and draperies for now. The chairs and new sofa will have to wait. I found this rug which seems to have a bit of green so maybe that could work until I re-upholster the chairs. Any opinion on this rug?

    EDIT: I rotated the table so the chairs are in diagonal. I like it but I made a mistake on the door to the basement. It swing outward which would mean that we would hit the back of the chair and we open it :(

    I am not sure about the blue. It might be too light. Also I wonder if it is too formal with the direction I am going.
