Space between counter and old tile backsplash

Hi everyone!

Any ideas of what to do in this space between my mother-in-law's new counters and her old back splash. Yes, I know replacing the back splash completely would be best. It is not in the budget and we are going to reuse the one that is there currently, but paint it white. It is a plain, cream square tile.

We do not want to add the 4 inch quartz back splash. We are trying to avoid that. We have some of these tiles. Should we trim them to size and add a row of them under? Or should we look for some sort of mosaic detail piece? Other options?

I think adding the piece in would be best, since we are going to paint over it. I do not want it to be jagged from cutting and look bad. I do not know what size gaps are present here.

Thank you for any help and advice.
