This is Caterpillar dead or alive?

My friend got the caterpillar off of 1 of the plants we have and we have butterfly life cycle cage for it and to put it on the end of the curtain rod and it lived for a while and now it's shriveled up and dead it used to be form brown with black dots on top and now it's black and shriveled up
