I dont want to be a slave to the garden :). the lot is already a ton bigger than I’m used to. I’ve been digging out four o’clock that had taken over the flower beds. I agree with the swing. It just blocked the path from Driveway to front door.

what is the very tall shrub against the house in that 18 inch bed .. i would include that in your plan ... get rid of it ... there is no beating that monster back.. in that tiny bed ... im not even sure you could dig it out.. to reuse in near the driveway ...

i would also thin out the giant blob of green.. further out from the door ... else.. no matter what you do closer.. that will not look good in a unified design ... once this is edited .. i would be able to better understand how proceed closer in ... [besides its going to hide whatever you do in closer .. perhaps defeating what you are attempting to accomplish...] ....

its sort of like painting.. prep work is 95% of the job ... the actual plant choice and planting is the easy part ....

Ken, The super tall tree that should never have been? Haha Yes the box woods in the front bed need to be moved Or removed entirely. That bed is overall way too tall. I 100% agree. If there’s anything I can move/adjust shape I figure now is the time. Then start adding. I have a small redbud in the backyard I can also transplant. I just don’t know if I need the bushes somewhere. I also have some nandina that can be moved.

I can't really help because this is my weak spot, but just wanted to say what a charming house you have, and what an absolutely wonderful entryway this could be. So very welcoming! Please keep us posted. Maybe I can learn something through you lol.

I would do a low ground cover that is recommended for your region. One needs to be able to see the front door.

yvonne, I was thinking about some creeping thyme in the 18” bed in front but the Other beds are sooo big for ground cover only that I’m at a loss. It’s hard with there being no step up at all into the house and everything being on the same elevation. I’m going to remove some of the dirt from the beds so they at least aren’t taller than the front porch.

Get rid of or prune some of the bushes in the front bed. If it were me, I would do almost all perennials.

Some of these plants would look good. Dianthus (pinks), Snow in Summer, Lavender, Russian Sage ( a small bush), Plox, Liatris, False Indigo (yellows), and Ninebark (red foliage).

Sprintsr boxwoods along the path. Small and can be controlled. A pretty dwarf weeping tree (yellow) Cherry maybe or maple.
Something with fall and winter interest in blue area. Taller than boxwood! And if you have room maybe some grasses along the driveway.

You could also do grasses along the front by the window.
