That said, I don't know if I would believe that World Market's goods from India are as pure as you may think. I have spent a lot of time in India and also other developing nations. Children in many of these countries are viewed differently than they are here in the US. At quite young ages they are expected to participate in supporting the family. And, they are not nearly as sheltered or coddled as here in the US. In India and in many SE Asian countries we would shake our heads in astonishment as we would see a family with three children all clinging to one motorcycle when our grandchilden are sheltered in space ship worthy high end car seats. And, we observed children of 5 or 6 out paddling canoes in rivers all by themselves (no life jackets of course) and a three year old using a full size machete. I am not saying this is right but just making some observations about how life in other place sin the world can be very different from what we are accustomed to.

Julieste - I hear you on India and how different it is for their children, and it’s not good of course. That’s still not like rounding up Muslims and putting them in concentration camps to work or dealing in human trafficking resulting in God knows what, besides the child and slave labor issues.

Lightology lets you filter by label, and one of the labels is "Made in the USA." They lean modern, but not exclusively.

That is gorgeous!! Good for you for not buying from China. Along with all the other reasons, it adds to the carbon footprint shipping things all around the world instead of more locally sourced.

Isn't this tragic. So many lost jobs for our fine craftsman.

In a related example, I have just been looking for an American made Sunbeam Coffee Maker that I remember in my family's home in the 50's. It uses 'vacuum technology' that is all the rage now for coffee experts. You can still find the Sunbeam coffee makers on Ebay and in thrift shops after 65 years complete with their cords. That speaks to the fine workmanship. You won't find a working Mr. Coffee from the 80's

Another brand to consider - Schonbek light fixtures, "rooted in the American craftsmanship since 1870". I have two of their crystal chandeliers and they are just pure beauties. I believe some of their fixtures are made to order...And all of them are designed, engineered and manufactured Plattsburgh, NY, U.S.A.

There's a great 2010 French documentary film called "Bébés" ("Babies"). The camera follows four different families/newborns/babies for a period of about one year. These families live in four different corners of the world and they couldn't have come from more different socio-economic backgrounds. Fascinating to watch. What's interesting is that there's no narration, we get to see the families and make our own conclusions!

I feel like I could have written this post! I picked Oldebricklighting for my kitchen and I'm struggling with the chandelier. My husband doesn't like sputnik either! I'm excited to look through all of these! It feels like all lighting is made in China.

I think we're doing Amerock cabinet hardware. The ones I picked were made in Thailand.

Any other places to look that you've come across that you recommend? It's so challenging.

Just received my order from Old Brick Lighting.  The globe has two very prominent mold seams not shown when viewing product images.  They detract from the great form of the globe.

I've been hunting the internet for floor lamps NOT made in China (made in USA/Canada would be great but I'll consider any country that doesn't currently have concentration camps) for several weeks, and most sites don't post "manufacturing country of origin", likely since they make so much money from the Chinese market. Need to pay at least $1000 for anything decent as well if you can find it (floor lamps at least).

NOTE: I double checked many of the American companies that folks have listed above, and some still manufacture in China. Good luck!

Thanks Sherryl. Unfortunately there are no floor lamps, only chandeliers, sconces. I will continue the near-impossible search for a nice floor lamp <$1000 not made in China. I've been using https://notochina.org/ as a resource, and there are other similar sites. But no silver bullet for non-China shopping. Looking forward to a day when an amazon-like site that either avoids human-rights-abuse countries, or at least honestly states country of manufacture.

Are you opposed to vintage? I would maybe look for Frederick Cooper, Stiffel or similar brands depending on the style you’ve looking for.

katmu I agree! Second hand is a great way to shop guilt free.

I also don't like the labor practices in China, and goods from there can bad quality too. But buying Chinese stuff is practically unavoidable, so I have a couple of "rules". For the most part I'm ok with it if they're either:

A. A brand that's known for good quality (such as Apple), or

B: A company that's known to monitor their sources, such as Ikea (they're strict about ethical practices).
