current day jewelry cabinet/armoire.

Would help if you opened that top door and took a picture inside. Also measure that side compartment. Feel on the inside for any areas that used to have screws.

it’s definitely not current day. i can’t find any brand or marking yet but you can tell just by touching it it’s older (can’t confirm deco, but definitely at LEAST 40-years old, and I trust the woman who gave it to me and said she got it from an older couple who’d had it for decades). it definitely has spots where hinges and a latch were. i was thinking a slide-out for ties too, but can’t find similar pieces online.

Well, 40 years old would put it in the 1980's, which is what I meant by current rather than being an authentic Art Deco (1920's) piece. Not all furniture has marks/stamps on it. Some things are home woodworking projects or imports, etc.

But tie storage is a good guess. The upper cabinet could have been for hats. Could also have been a lingerie chest.

thanks all. i’ll post more pics in the morning. it’s about 20”deep, 20” wide, and 64” tall. I honestly think it’s from the 20s-30s (why I said authentically deco period in the OP) but was being as circumspect as possible by dating it to at LEAST before i was born, since i’m not a furniture expert (though i’m starting to be a hobbyist!). i was thinking handmade as well! because there’s some funny little details that don’t make total sense. it’s definitely been in the same old woman’s family for “a really long time” (whatever that means) and they’ve done little repairs and i think perhaps re-finishing too. it’s a quirky little thing and i like it a lot, whatever it is.

It‘s hard to tell without out more info/photos, but it does resemble a gentleman’s dresser/chest/chiffonier. The top cubbie would have been used for hat storage. The narrow compartment could have had a sliding pullout for ties or possibly a pants press.

The hat compartment is why I asked for pictures of that area. If it has the small drawer or had a mirror in it probably not for a man. The wood would have holes in it unless they have been filled if it had a mirror.

I think it is an older piece from the 1920's or 1930's. I am a fan of Art Deco and have bought a few older pieces. The hardware pulls are older and are similar to those I have on some Waterfall pieces. The "legs" have a very typical Art Deco stacking style and the piece itself is curved.

I suspect it was a lingerie chest but certainly could be used to store any smaller items.

I have never seen any piece with that small opening to the side and don't have any idea of how it would have been functional. Theoretically one could install hardware that holds ties or scarves or belts that slide out but if one wanted to maximize the storage.

It's a shame because it's hard to think of a way to utilize the piece without it looking a bit odd. You could have a custom piece installed but that would be expensive. I did have my old Waterfall bedroom suite refinished and some items repurposed but that was expensive and only made sense to me because I liked them more than any other bedroom furniture I could have bought. But the cost was as much or more as good quality new furniture would have been.

Since this doesn't have the elaborate veneers and seems to have already been refinished, I think it would be possible to fit a door to it that matches okay. These are probably that lipped semi-inset doors (why don't I know the name of this by now??) that you see on older builtin cabinetry a lot. But it's a simple profile and it's not fancy wood.

Guess you could stick a mini ironing board in there...or just seal it up.

Look at the inside, top surface of that long, tall slot. Is there a metal rail in there? If so, there could have been a slide-out hanger for holding necklaces, belts, etc.

20 inches deep? Maybe there was a sliding panel or a mirror - or ironing board as fori mentions? It doesn't seem wide enough to store apparel without messing it up from brushing against the inside of the compartment.
