Do a search for places that sell bulk mulch. Chances are they will carry various soil mixes or know someone who does.

Call local stables in your area. Most horse manure is collected either by the County or farms to compost.

I moved to Florida from NY and discovered the Town we lived in composted horse manure from local stables and offered it free to residents in that Town. I used to get truck loads of composted horse manure from the Town each year.

Of course, we had to spread it ourselves...a lot of work! But, my soil was like black gold.

I would call your local stables and ask them what they do with their manure.

Where does yard waste go from residences in your area? Is it a municipal trash service or private? If city, they may have a composting operation. Also many cities have a dropoff site, aka "mulch site". Not exactly compost but you can often find compostables and there may be stuff there that is composted enough to use.

I trust you have a compost bin? :-D

Be sure that they don't use this weed killer in the horse manure. Several people here have had problems with it. I believe it can last three years.

My county (Citrus) is giving away free mulch at the landfill. It doesn't help you immediately, but you might check with where ever your county takes brush and debris. If you have a decent sized property, don't get rid of yard waste. Make a pile (watch out for snakes and whatnot). Large trunks and limbs take a long time to break down, but everything else will self mulch after a couple of years. One thing to consider if you have a tree service come out - have them take stuff down, but leave the chippings. You can potentially get a cheaper rate and free mulch.

If collecting soil and mulch in bulk you should be careful that the soil is good quality - your yields will be much higher with a fertile soil. Not sure what you will do with the mulch, but the wood chips take forever to decompose and adding compost that is not fully composted to your soil could lead to nutrient deficiencies in your soil.. I am making my garden soil this year. Found a recipe for Mel's mix online. I am adding it to the soil left in my raised beds from last year and the plants that I have planted so far are doing very well. I am mulching with grass clippings, am concerned the clippings will hold too much moisture and lead to problems, but it was free, so I'm giving it a try.
