Bathroom Reno almost done

Quotes to replace tub and terrible tile came in at $5000-9000. Because of covid one of our friends was laid off, a handyman guy, so he agreed to work with us and our limited budget.

The tub got painted rather than replaced. My wish for white subway tile was dashed because there were non in stock in our local shops so I had to choose something else and went with a grey watercolour 12x24.

Floor covering also was something that might take weeks to order so we choose to carry thru the hardwood flooring from the hallway and we got half a box free.

The counter top had to be chosen from what was in stock as having one made was at least 6 weeks lead time.

We were rigorous about the budget and our guy was helpful with that.

Floor, baseboards, toilet, painted tub, tub/shower plumbing, tile, counter, backsplash, sink, taps, vanity light, labour... $3000.

I am really iffy about the backsplash. Not going to remove it but will learn to like it. It was leftover tile from the shower area.

The vanity mirror... each side panel covers a medicine cabinet with three glass shelves. The center panel is stationery. Am considering removing all, painting the cabinet sides and installing a single mirror in the center.

Walls and base cabinet are cloud white.
Medicine cabinet could be a bold colour and I would put on display perfume and some small hand painted little china jewelry boxes from my grandma. Pretty things. This is the main bathroom in the house and only used by me (and occasional company).

The question... I think it needs a little something something. Colours in the house are cloud white, revere pewter, and navy. I tried the grey in here but it didn’t feel right.

@sue Wulff. I have been considering that!

I think navy on the vanity might be really nice. And some pretty new handles for the cabinets.

Do you think the walls could use some colour other than white? What about a very pale grey colour. Not revere pewter which to me leans more taupe, but something a true grey that would pick up some colour from your tile choices. I like BM Stonington Grey - HC 170, but I think it might be a bit dark.....something in that hue, but a lighter version. I don't have my paint deck with me so I don't have any other suggestions on that.

I'm not sure about the backsplash tile, I know it is cost effective and is the same as the shower. I think you might find something a bit closer to the counter in colour, maybe with some grey flecks in it. But if you think you want to live with it I think it may fade more into the background if it isn't against a white wall. Also, once you get your things out on the counter, that will help as it won't be so bare and stark as it is in the pictures.

If you do decide to change out the backsplash tile, you might consider a glass tile, for a lighter, airier feel.

Here are some examples and you'd need so little for your space.

Are you putting up a shower curtain? There are lots of really pretty ones to choose from that could help elevate the feel of the room a bit.

Maybe a larger, more colourful piece of art to replace the piece you have hanging above the toilet.

Some nice fluffy towels and maybe a nice plant on the counter.

Enjoy your new bathroom. I think you're on your way and just need to add some colour and texture to make it feel pulled together.

Sherwin Williams Light French Gray is a very soft gray for the walls

@sue wulff. Thanks for the tip on the grey paint. Will check it out. Not changing the tile. I will just have to get used to it. I didn’t have much chance to search options because of covid, budget, working hours, and the quick opportunity to get it done.

Yes I will put up a shower curtain. Current one is white which was temporary for 5 years.

I think the all white walls is too much but I don’t want it too dark either.

I think a medicine cabinet with two mirrors can be really helpful to see something on your back. I would keep it.

I agree with houssaon that your medicine cabinet allows you to see the back of your hair. If that’s not important to you, then removing the entire medicine cabinet and changing to a fabulous mirror will definitely make the room different. Painting the vanity blue is a great idea. Check out all shades so you complement the grays in your tiles. I repainted my MBR vanity in SW Distance, which is a pretty blue and lighter than navy. Gold or brushed brass fixtures would also brighten the room. (Would you be willing to change the faucet?). The room looks updated and modern. Now you get to do the “decorating” fun part. Start looking at artwork that is colorful.

Great job so far! I like the idea of painting the vanity navy or doing a wall tile.

Great job and I like your current mirror set up.

I would try borrowing some colorful things from the rest of the house (ex. A colorful pottery pot with flowers and some art) and just kind of putting them on the countertop and leaning them against walls before deciding if that is enough color or whether you need to paint.
It’s hard to judge an empty space.

I would remove the mirror/cabinet and replace with full wall beveled mirror. I would consider some pretty wallpaper for the mirror wall and window wall. This bath is screaming for color and personality. Could go black and white, shades of pink flowers. Big and bold. Or just a pretty salmon or pink color on walls. Pick a look you love and let that determine color of vanity cabinets.

You could just wallpaper the window wall and pick up color from wallpaper for vanity wall ain’t colir. The blue gray of the above aqua wallpaper would be really pretty.

you've done a great job with the redo, its looking great. I see you have a piece of art above the toilet, you could use that as inspiration for a paint color. its hard to see the colors in the print, but if you love that print, possibly consider using a bright color from that print for the walls. would look fun and fabulous!

I love the idea of painting or wallpapering that window wall. It will take some time to find the right one. The bathroom door is always open and when walking up the hallway it would be cool to have a feature to walk towards.

This is the photo above the toilet. A friend’s capture.

Great picture. We can take inspiration from it! That would mean paint the vanity black! Yes! New gold hardware. Gold soap dish. Bbl

love those wallpapers from flo, gorgeous and what a statement!!

beautiful changes!! I am sure you are just pleased as punch!

another thought is to bring in a moody deep green or blush in paint on walls or cabinet with gold fixtures and the bold floral wallpaper...

Ask your photographer friend if she could get the photograph blown up into wallpaper or in big enough sizes you could cut out groups of flowers and paste onto wall. Easier than all wallpaper and less cost.

You certainly renovated yourself out of a mess! I love Flo’s idea of at least one wallpapered wall. It will really brighten up the room. If there a style you like? A colorful floral is always great unless there are men in the family that won’t tolerate it.

I just cut and pasted wall covering so not great but kind of gives you idea. I painted mirror wall a deep gray kind of like shower tile!

@flo mangan. Interesting mock up. Will try to do that with the other wallpaper ideas.

I liked the pink roses with the soft grey. And another “no” vote for an over-the-toilet cabinet. Just be aware that bathroom wallpapers eventually start to curl at the seams and ends. (If it’s a room with constant hot showering.)

Thank you all. Put the end of this bathroom Reno on hold now as I am painting kitchen cupboards. So tired. You offered some great ideas and advice.
